No that i've got the D2 TD5 back together and able to road test, i have a vibration/resonance at about 2,200RPM, does it in all gears while accelerating but not when power off/slowing down, pretty broad when driving but free revving noticeable just over 2,000RPM. Just fitted new crankpulley, but was there before it was replaced.
Seems to engine related as it's not there when cruising or slowing down, hard to describe, more like a harshness more than a vibration.
Anyone come across something like this before?

Check front propshaft?

There's a bit of a harmonic at about 2,200 rpm with the TD5 that manifests itself in anything that is a bit loose, usually the handbrake shoes. There is an LR Bulletin on that fix but sometimes just an adjustment can sort that a bit. Does it go away in 4th lockup?

Sorry for thread hijack but my Td5 has that grindy feel which goes away goes away in 4th lockup - any idea what it is??

Hi Charlie,
To check if it is the handbrake rattle just ease on the handbrake a little when you have the rattle at 2,200 and it should go away if that is the problem. However I don't like the sound of "grindy feel" maybe it is a trans problem.

Mine has a nasty vibration to it as well but it's only at a dead stop. It's a tad worse in gear than in P or N. I'm like 80% sure it's mounts though. Smooth as silk during revs and moving...

There are LOTS of posts about TD5 vibrations,,
cheaper to spend an hour on here searching than just start replacing parts,
Though the front propshaft is always a good place to start.:D

The engine mount vibration a is near continuous rumble, made me feel like clenching my teeth together. It was so good and quiet after we changed the mounts.

After going thru 39 pages of posts on the ultimate fix for vibrations there doesn't seem to be a fix, people have changed every conceivable component, or added snake oil, without solving the problem. Seems to be an inherent TD5/auto resonance at a particular rev range around 2,200.
I think i'll just turn the music up and stay above that rev range.

:D
yea, people try lots of things, most end up reducing the vibe,,
its a great way to check over your LR though,,

Hi Guys,
My Td5 auto has now had pretty much everything fixed / replaced and still has the subtle grindy and to me, very annoying vibration that goes almost completely away when converter locks up. I have come to conclusion it is probably the converter on my car and will live with it for the time being.
Had a new alternator installed after a breakdown and that has had a small positive effect.
Cheers, Charlie

Hmm greased the front and back propshafts and I think it has reduced it, have also left the acoustic cover off.

With regards to the hand brake rattle, it took me approx 1 hour to fix but the problem is caused by the inbuilt harmonics origination from the engine. When I used to build race engines if the vibration is in the back it usually comes from the front of the engine and vise a versa. The guys at Ross Engineering in Sydney have now got a new type of harmonic balancer ($900.00 very expensive)that they build so will ring them tomorrow to see if they think that it fixes the problem. Have used their stuff in ( fluid damper) race engines and they are good stuff. with one engine it stopped the flywheel completely coming off under full acceleration. Hope this helps as mine is doing the same thing.

Most common vibe at around 2200 rpm is handbrake shoes , it is ,as pippin suggested only a matter of easing the hand brake on while the vibration is there to see if it stops ..... Give it a go, it can also be exacerbated by bad / old engine mounts

As these 5 cylinder engines seem to develop this vibration after they have a few hundred K's on them, I'm going to try and track down the culprit. I think it might be the front damper and the injectors not firing in sync and maybe be soft front engine mounts but I think that would be a long stretch. The handbrake is only a consequence of something else. I have read that the process they make the OE damper do have a habit of braking down over time and as they are to smooth out internal vibrations it might be the original cause. I will be replacing mine with a powerbond replacement damper by dayco, so hopefully this will decrease the harmonic vibration at the 2200 - 2500 rpm. Probably without totally rebuilding the engine and tunnel boring the crank and balancing everything, I don't think I will totally get rid of it but the lower the vibration the less problems over time. At idle the injectors seem to be not in sync so replacing the harness and then getting the injectors serviced if still out of wack. I hope to have all these done over the next month or so. Crossing my fingers.

OK changed the harmonic damper this weekend and it at least decreased the vibration by about 3/4. Still a little bit but no where as bad as it was. Got the balancer from eBay ( powerbond by dayco) well worth the hassle putting it on. Now the engine mounts and I might have a quite motor.:)
