View Full Version : V8 Transmission warning light when driven on soft sand

New to forum. Hello everyone.


When driving Disco series two automatic on soft sand for 10-15 minutes transmission temperature warning light comes on. As soon as I get on hard surface she cools down Ok. Don't think she should get so hot so quickly. Any ideas Cheers Dave

Manually select first or second gear, or use low range instead and let the engine rev freely. The torque converter slipping at lower revs is what mostly creates the heat.

What bee utey said , plus make sure you let your tyres down, before driving on sand , you will need an auto service as the oil , especially if non synthetic dx3 will be burnt .

Thanks for the help fellas. Gives me something to think about. Is changing the transmission oil easily done or do I need someone who knows.? Cheers

its usually a two person job, there is a simple but specific procedure,,
should be in The Good Oil Forum.
If your beach running is an ongoing thing, maybe a second transmission cooler--;)

It shouldn't be doing that, especially so quickly.

I would also check and clean out your ATF cooler which is between the radiator and AC condenser. These are prone to blocking externally.

Once you've done that, I'd also get the ATF changed.

I'd also make of these to blow mud out from the radiator.

It started life as a hanging pot hose. It will clear the radiators mostly without damaging it.

Exactly,i did a lot of really hard work in soft sand in the D2's i had.
i only ever saw that light on once,we had done about an hour of driving in very soft sand and then got badly bogged,which is when the light came on.Ambient temps were well over 36 degrees at the time.

Once the vehicle was left idling in neutral,the light went out pretty quickly.

Mine were diesels though.
