But not the "Off" button which turns every thing off.
Also the "Econ" button turns of the compressor (don't think it's ever entirely off) but allows the fans to run.

Actually there is no (obvious) a/c off button on a D3, the "off" button as mentioned turns off the whole hvac...

Bottom right there is a button "Econ" press this so the light is on, it will then only blow air as required.

Its one of them stupid European things where they cant make the hvac too simple and obvious to work out...

From posts here,Im lead to belive that the aircon compressor runs all the time, may be confusing it with the D4.
Ive never turned my aircon off,its one of the best units Ive ever used,I just adjust the player comfort level to suit.I do use the fan speed control as I dont like noise.Only use the auto function in very hot weather.

Off does free up the magnetic clutch on the A/C compressor, I can tell because I have a noisy bearing in mine which goes quiet when I turn the A/C off using that Off button.
I'll have to check the Eco button to see if it does too.

It must be the D4 that runs the pump all the time.Im sure I read it here so it must be true;););););)
Certainly never heard it cut in and out like a normal AC pump;););););)

I did a test on my D4 - if you have the climate control completely off - the compressor is off, if you have on econ, the compressor is off. If you have it on anything else, the compressor is on, and doesn't switch off. Very similar to my Saab with the variable volume compressor, they both use a clutch for when you turn it off manually (or at WOT etc), but, if you have it on and NOT in Econ mode, the clutch never disengages, only the variable volume function of the compressor is used.
