Is that really a common problem? I haven't heard of significant numbers here?

A post on the internet - seems legit. ;)

2 minutes on Google would indicate the problem exists... there are threads on several forums around the world about the cranks and bearings. ( Including this one.)
However, as AnD3rew pointed out, I'd question how wide spread the problem really is.
There are a LOT of those engines represented on this forum and I don't see it flooded with issues....

After reading the summary on how to limit the possibility of it happening , I thought to myself, this forum has had those suggestions for ages.
The gearbox oil change - plenty of info on here about that and how often it should be done
The oil change interval - plenty on here say 10,000ks is more practicle,
The oil pump change at timing belt change time - well in a round about way if you are worried about the housing you have.
Mostly common sense stuff.

I reckon one of the WA mob,Richard K snapped a crank on a Harvey outing.Gordon may be able to confirm as Gordon and Richard were the main 2 to arrange Harvey trips together.

I know of spun bearings and a snapped crank on D3s in WA. It was enough for me to rule out a second hand 2.7 in any body variant while looking for a replacement vehicle for my D2. I wasn't aware of any issues with the 3L in the D4s, in the end for the price of a 3 year old "out of warranty" D4 I bought a new Defender. I probably should leave now before I get thrown out.:D

I've only heard of a few engine, diff (2 for one member of my club) and axle failures with the Deefer, oh and the odd water leak. Don't forget Digger's nightmare.
I find it amusing that the Defender owners are always over here in the D3/D4/RRS section chiming in when a problem is discussed but you never see the D3/D4/RRS owners in the Defender section second guessing the Defender problems. I guess they have to justify the Defender purchase to themselves where as most D3/D4/RRS owners never really considered the Defender at all.

You've got to be pretty unlucky Eddy. I work on many many of these and we've never had or heard of a crank failure in our local circle of 'informants'. Plenty of trans issues and other faults however 99% of them caused by a lack of maintenance and/ or mechanical abuse. They are reasonably exxy to do major maintenance procedures like timing belts etc if you are paying people to do the job. I think they are a great engine and drivetrain and overall a good package. Just be aware of the need for good maintenance and you'll find the vehicle very suitable☺

Thanks Justin.I have been doing my own maintenance, oil changes at 10000ks and transmission oil/sump changed at 88000ks plus all the other oils changed. With a
Mega flush of the transmission as an insurance, the drivetrain should be good for a few years.
