View Full Version : Piranha dual battery tray

Can anyone with a piranha dual battery tray in a puma tell me what the distance between the tray (where the second battery goes) and the underside of the seat is?

The recommended battery is either an optima yellow top or exide orbital which are 200mm tall. I want to know if a supercharge allrounder which is 223mm to the top of the terminals will fit.

Cheers!

Not with my Defender at the moment so can't measure it, but I think 223 would be a problem.

It'll be close, I've got a piranha tray and had to use normal nuts instead of wingnuts on terminals of six batt as it just touched the slide out cover, I also lined the underside of the slide cover with gasket rubber for Justin.

I had a century which was about the same height with the same battery tray and with the terminals fitted I marked and then cut off the surplus from the battery terminal.
I also have a sheet of insertion rubber between the batteries and the top cover.
A td5 Defender but the battery compartment is probably the same dimensions?

Paul.

Cheers all, I think I'll probably just get a yellow top!

Blue top FTW.
Has threaded as well as SAE posts.
Easier to add additional accessories if needed IMO, and same specs as a yellow top.

Cheers Mitch, I'll have a look at one of those too.

Couldn't find a blue top, so bought a yellow top.

Next question then, what thread is this and/or how do you connect the earth from the yellow top to this?
I've got Tim's (drivesafe) Defender USI160 kit and the pre-made earth strap is quite short so I assume the two earths are connected, since it isn't long enough to go outside the battery box down to the bolt on the chassis.

I also have the USI-160 kit. I didn't have enough thread on that teminal to do anything with so I ended up getting a new earth lead made up for the aux battery and ran it down to the bolt on the chassis. That way I didn't have to stuff around with that flimsy terminal.

When I finally get my Piranha tray this week (ordered in January ) my plan is to re-wire so that I have a single positive running to the ex-box and run all the wiring from the back to there instead of the current temporary bird's nest I have in the battery compartment. I'll then earth the ex-box back to the bolt on the chassis too.

Cheers,
Jon

Ahhh the spiteful LR battery post terminal strikes again!

Mitch, which one?

Also, what's a good type of negative terminal to use? There's not much room in there with a dual battery setup...

I used the Optima P/N D34M. It's a BCI Group 34 size optima with the blue top, grey sides, and the SAE posts and threaded terminals.
Its a hybrid style AGM good for cranking and deep cycle. 55Ah, 770 IIRC CCA...

Got it thru RRturboD on here.

Just keep in mind your battery tray is different to the one I used... so consult the supplier for which BCI class battery you need to use.
