Discovery tdi5 tyres

I have a discovery 2 and it looks like i will be looking for some new tyres for the old girl , whats on it just now are 235/70 r16 Maxtrek su 800,
thy only have to do every day driving and pull a caravan every now and then , have not done much off road all bar driving over a friends farm,
just want some info on seasonable priced ones,The wheels are genuine LR alloy

Choice of tyres is a bit like asking whats the best beer..! many favourites out there
but I just fitted 245/70/16" Bridgestone All Terrain A/T 697
and after a 3000Km trip have found them to be quiet and good on sand & trails etc and only $210ea fitted
Slightly bigger than standard but speedo is still about right vs GPS
legal (in SA anyway)
Im happy and would buy them again - but only early days

depends what you want to do with them.....

I have just fitted Yokohama Geolander ATs 265/70/16 and have found them great. Very quiet and grippy on the black stuff, and fantastic on sand. They are a little hard to get off the line at the lights though as they are 7% greater in circumference than std 235/70/16.
Come to think of it, you mentioned towing a van - depending on the size of the van, these may be too big. (I do tow a 1ton boat without any probems).

I decided to stay with the stock size, 235/70 16 with 694 Desert Duellers. Quiet happy so far, on road is good, but then it's only done 1,500K's since i got it.

We bought our Disco with BF Goodrich AT's (standard size) and I thought they were great so when the time came for new treads I dropped the vehicle off to the local tyre shop and asked for a new set of the same.

I then received a phone call to say they were not legal due to not meeting loading on the tyre placard. Suggested solution was to go the next size up in the same tyre which met the rating so we went ahead.

The car drove horrible, too much flex on the side walls was felt on corners. Best way to describe it was a delay between steering input and direction change. This was amplified on highway bends to the point I was worried about my wife driving the vehicle at such speed. I tried different tyre pressures without being able to resolve the issue.

To the credit of the tyre shop they were quite happy to take the set back in exchange for a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T 697 in the standard size.

Very happy with the Bridgstones to date. We have a few trips on them (highway, trails, towing the camper) and I have found them to be great in all conditions. I would definitely recommend them.

Light truck tyres are common in 245/70 but not 235/70. FYI the difference in height is 4 mm. Hardly worth the worry. Light truck construction is good to have if you're towing. I have bfg at's in 245/70. Cost $220 a corner. No handling issues whatsoever. ;)

Achilles Dessert Hawk HT have done well on mine. 80k plus running 42psi front and 40psi rear with 10k rotations. Cheap and great Hwy milage. I get 70km more out of a full tank running these than when I run the BFG2's.
It's worth having two sets of purpose built tyres versus having a comprimise 'all terrain' tyre which is not necessarily good at either extreme.

Not sure if you want to spend that much, $300+ but I can say from experience the Michelin latitude Cross are an excellent tyre, low road noise, grip nicely in the wet. I tow a 18tft fibre glass boat on a tandem trailer and they handle well. if you going to do mud stuff then another tyre would suit you better.

Funny how people can have such varied opinions! I've had 3 sets of BFG All Terrains and absolutely loved them. My D2 had ACE so not sure if that had anything to do with the handling. I got around 80-90k out of each set.
