Mods required before registering a perentie in SA!

Hi all,

Just been to have my perentie inspected prior to registering it (it has a NSW registration). They call it an 'identification inspection' making me think all they will do is make sure it isn't stolen.

Anyway, before hardly having a look at it: they say I need to cut off the 'pointy bits' off the front bumper (because somehow this makes them more dangerous) and remove the pointy bits off the rear bumper so the tail lights can be seen from the side. Either of these would not be easy because we are talking about 20mm steel at the front and several pieces of awkwardly placed 6mm steel at the back. And I am also apparently required to make the exhaust either point down at 45? or come straight out the back because if it is left pointing out the side if the car backfires it may kill someone. It needs a ignition lock which was the only thing I was expecting.

This all seems arbitrary (well, NSW was quite happy with it), particularly the front bumper. Unfortunately this is now documented because I was very tempted to just go to the other inspection centre as I'm sure they would say something different again, although hopefully less demanding.

I suppose I just have to do this once but as I said it seems quite arbitrary, the rego is expiring today so I will need to pay for permits etc to get this sorted not to mention that I can't drive it.

Just for interests sake how many people in SA have had similar issues?

Sadly, yes in SA they have decided to go all dictatorship about it.

The helicopter hangers, hood tools and brackets and exhaust do not comply with the design rules of the time. The military can is not required to abide by them ( and can get exemptions), we as civilians are.
It's frustrating that at worst, some other states will make to you take the bonnet tools and brackets off (pedestrian safety) but will leave the rest alone.

Thanks all...yes I have had a quick search, however no roadworthy cert is required in SA. Inspection was supposedly only to verify identity of the car as required for interstate transfers, but they obviously also ensure it is 'roadworthy' even though it has current NSW registration. I appreciate that argument is futile but the ADRs are just that, Australian, so all states should be consistent in their application of these rather than the current arbitrary situation that it seems to be. Fortunately I have a friend whom I think can perform the work, but it is quite an imposition to have this done when sensibly it is not necessary given it was able to be registered in another state supposedly under the same legislation without requiring these mods.

SA is the only state that seems to have an issue with them.

There have been a couple of instances in other states where the issue of bonnet tools was raised, and that was solved by going to another inspection station in most instances and taking them off as a last resort.

SA is the only state that makes you vandalize your car.

I had no issues. Most people don't.

I'd bolt a nudge bar to the pointy bits on the bumper and mount a light bar on it.
There is a thread somewhere where a fellow relocated the tail lights to the jerry can holders.
Get an exhaust fitter to make a piece that deflects the exhaust down and tack weld or clamp on the end of the pipe.

Yup, as Mick says, modify to suit (and then remove!) ;)

Jokes aside, Id be doing exactly that.. Borrow some bits (bonnet, bumper etc) get the check done, then put it all back.. No one is going to bat an eyelid! :)

Yes Mick, I was thinking exactly that. I could mount the lights behind the jerry can using the existing screw holes, they did say I could put something over the front pointy bits to make it less pointy.... the exhaust as you say should be fairly easy to do although my welding is pretty poor! The previous owner has already removed the bonnet tools and bogged up the holes, which predictably is falling off, so I don't need to worry about those. Put them back later.

Mine went through the rego inspection at Regency about 18months ago. No issues at all and that was as an unregistered vehicle, direct from the auction in Queensland. Can't help wth the rear other than a temp remove and refit of the lights. I'd suggest covering the front pointy bits with something. I posted a possible idea a while back.

Thanks Aussie... I guess I was unlucky. Ive bought a 45? elbow for the exhaust, will move the lights to behind the jerry can and will try to use the existing holes for the rubber strip, probably using a plate. Ive made a cover for the pointy bit on the front bar which makes it less acute.

To save mucking about with the wiring, just take the jerry can holders off.
It's a bit of a pest to do
you have to take off the rear mudflaps and the mudflap strengthener so you can undo the bolts holding the rear lights in.
you can then pull the lights out of the rear bar (but you don't have to remove the wiring) in order to access the bolts inside the bar that hold the Jerry can holders on. Then remove the 2 bolts holding it to the tub and a small screw that goes into the helicopter hangers.

You'll probably find a whole lot of mud to clean out while your at it!
