View Full Version : Herpes to Kill Carp

It looks like they are finally going to have a viable control for the swimming rats of the rivers.

Herpes virus to be used in fight against carp in Murray River, Christopher Pyne says - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-05-01/herpes-to-eradicate-carp-in-murray-river-pyne-says/7373736)

Fishing off the bank on the Darling or any of it's tributaries over the past 10 years, I would have caught 1 Perch or Cod for every 500 carp and while someone will come onto this thread and say they have a great way of cooking them, in truth they are crap to eat.

Lets hope it works and the native fish can get back to some reasonable levels in our lifetimes

(snip!)

PS. the problem with the eating is how they die ... put in a esky of chilled/iced water and the calm down and die peacefully without stress. They fry fine. Just like catching some sea fish (Taylor) where it is important to bleed the fish immediately, else the flesh tastes awful.

I notice that it won't be rolled out till 2018 because they want to have contingencies in place for dealing with millions of dead European Carp. If it gets rid of the feral pest, I'd be happy to get a tinny and a scoop net then sit on the river to remove the dead fish. If they put collection points with freezer type shipping containers every few Km they'd even be able use the dead (but not rotting) fish for fertilizer.

Perhaps everyone with a tinny in the Murray Darling Basin could volunteer 1 week or just a weekend on the river during the release period.

I've tried eating it a few times but always tasted like mud, i know the Vietnamese and southern Europeans have a way of making it edible.
Fertiliser is probably the best thing you can do with them.

Think about us poor buggers, down at the bum end of the Murray.

We'll have our drinking water infused with Herpes and tonnes of dead Carp.

If you want to make some money, get into the rainwater tank business in Adelaide ASAP I think....

Agree with the muddy taste, not unlike other muddy inland fish like trout etc.
I was given some at a country show, lightly battered and fried, and then the fish type was revealed. It proved that they can be eaten, but tend to agree that fertiliser is probably best way!

The Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3) the European Carp herpes virus, has been shown not to cross species to mamals and has been approved for use as safe by the European Commission. (See: https://blog.csiro.au/reclaiming-our-rivers-from-feral-carp/)

That would make it like Perrier compared to SA tap water .

Anyone who has seen sexua lobster's Pleasure Island would be familiar with the mad scientist (talking about an evil mutant creation):
"It was fashioned with the DNA of man, beetle, and eel, and the spleens of 10 tigers! I educated it with pictures of me in a dress, and then I gave it herpes!"

Given the Pleasure island video series, I can't help but chuckling at this.

Sounds legit! I won't worry any more then ;)Its a conspiracy lead by Big Science in a plan for global domination of humans by giving them carp herpes. The trial is in the Murray River, because weird things always happen around Adelaide* so no one would notice people wandering around with carp lips.

Those who do have concerns, don't have to worry because Adelaide is also the city of churches so when they're fleeing the Human-Carp zombie apocalypse won't have far to go to seek sanctuary! :wasntme:

Hey! I can see that as new Kellogg's animal character to replace Tony the Tiger et al - albeit 1-1/2 times as big.

I wonder what plans are in place to collect and dispose of the dead carp?
