Signed up for broadband last week, ADSL1500, with iinet, and I don't know how cI ever lived without it.
30 MB d/ls in just seconds instead of hours on dialup.
When the exchange gets up graded to Dslasm then 12000 speed is possible.
one has to marvel at technology.... I was living in the stone ages

Have a look at http://www.whirlpool.net.au/ for a list of ISP and service plans that are available in your area.
Damn good site... :-)

Well, I've seriously got the sh*&# on tonight. for 4 years we've been running Optus cable. When we joined the deal was really good, but it's since been watered down to the point where over 24 months it was going to cost us $2k for cable and phone line. Enough is enough I said.
So, we rang them up and they tweaked it a bit and we got them to $1800. Still not good enough I said... talked to Telstra, and got a deal at $1300. Good good I say. So, we get the cable in and all is good (they did a much nicer job of the install than optus did).
Anyway, I ring Optus tonight to arrange the disconnection and the first lady says why do you want to disconnect blah blah. Anyway she puts us onto their disconnect group, and lo and behold they'll give us the phone line for $8 a month and unlimited cable for $33 making a total of $1k for the 2 years.
So now I've got to ring Telstra and see if they'll let me out but I don't think there is a chance. Optus have only themselves to blame.
Anyway, the moral of the story is ring up and threaten to disconnect!

They quoted us $1500 install and $150 a month to have it. No broadband here either. Been a couple of months since they ask if we would be interested if the exchange was upgraded though so must be comming soon.

Don't know if the scheme is still going, but if you are rural, rather than remote, you should be eligible for 2-way satellite subsidised service.
$400 for install $79 per month, sign on for 24 months I think.
Very good speed, unless you want to play games, and then the ping times are too long.
Other thing is that it is worth checking with Telstra again.
Either with extension of distance from exchange limits - was 4km - now longer, you may be eligible.
Or you have to sign on a registration of interest in ADSL to your exchange, once magic number in your area sign expression of interest Telstra upgrades exchange to ADSL.
Great way to get community together to hate Telstra.

I am eligible for the satellite subsidy - but I am on solar power and it has been impossible to get information from Telstra as to power consumption. Also, costs are quite high compared to what I pay for dial-up, although I would be able to do without the extra phone line, and with the drought and other problems money is short.
I am 9km from the exchange, so recent extensions to distance won't help. I cannot find out whether the exchange is ADSL capable, but the problem may well be that the total number of the subscribers on the exchange is too low anyway (somewhere around 100 I would think). I believe that ISDN Home is available, but again, information is very hard to come by. And I have learned from experience you can't believe what Telstra tells you, and they won't put it in writing.

Can you do any faster than that? Would love to use it but just seems a little high for that speed.

I have to try that. I've been on Optus cable for 5 years for my home office and I got screwed 12 months in when they scrapped the "pay more for install and pay less per month". In that time I am out something like a year's rego on the Disco so I am right sore about it. I have been a loyal customer who has been offered nothing in terms of bonus for being loyal. Stayed with them out of principle so as NOT to have to give Telstra another cent. My second phone line is "fixed" after every decent rain and they refuse to upgrade the lines.

http://www.bigpond.com/internet-plans/broa...and/adsl/HiBIS/ (http://www.bigpond.com/internet-plans/broadband/adsl/HiBIS/) That's the adsl - does it get to my exchange and expressions of interest page. I think it is between thirty and sixty who need to sign up.
http://www.copperhead.cc/DW6000.html That's a page on the satellite modem they use.
Here is a pdf of instructions for it, 12v power. http://www.groundcontrol.com/DW6000PDF.pdf
Or try these guys.
http://www.clearnetworks.com.au/satellite.html
And the Optus satellite page.
http://www.optus.com.au/portal/site/person...00029a67c0aRCRD (http://www.optus.com.au/portal/site/personal/menuitem.9b38bb3dfffbeae30f7416058c8ac7a0/?vgnextoid=c175b42137054010VgnVCM10000029a67c0aRCR D)
If you are eligible for the subsidy and can get rid of the second phone line it's still exorbitant but not quite as bad.
ISDN is 64kb - 1 line - or 128kb - 2 line - you get one ISDN line in it carries 2 lines worth of stuff so you get voice and 64kb, etc. Last time I looked the prices were very high.
Cheers
Simon

heaps of so called "unlimited" deals about that really have download limits or speed throttling or are just plain slow or have 2 year contracts...
