Well I whipped up 4 tires to the tire place yesterday to have new tires fitted....

Anyway, I thought I'd drag the spare out of both cars and get the new tires put on them as they will have ancient tires......

sigh .................. How had i never noticed this, I'd checked the spare had tread and air when I got the car ... but never bothered to actually pull it out. That's a discovery wheel right  not only that, it won't fit as I don't have the nuts to use it.... I'm so pleased I carried a spare :wasntme:

I thought given this, I better check I can actually change a tire given the factory supplied wheel brace and jack. Well the jack.... A couple of pumps to prime it. I could see it "two stage" hydraulic bottle... What a bloody ripper. The 2nd stage seemed tight/stuck. It would only pop up a couple of millimeters every time I pumped it ... So I pulled it out from under the car and figured I'd pump it fully up and lubricate it with oil and slide the shaft in and out a few times....

It suddenly exploded ..... and yes I do mean EXPLODED to full height. The bit in my had took off like a bullet.... I'm bloody lucky it didn't take my head off

Bloody hell. CHECK THE JACK IN YOUR Land Rover. If it's 2nd stage it tight. ... I doubt you will be able to dismantle it. So destroy it and throw it to scrap metal They are extremely dangerous

I grabbed the jack out of the other Rangie .... lovely and smooth. Had the tires all changed over in no time. Obviously that jack has now been moved to this car.

That would have been great fun to have a flat right? A spare that doesn't fit, and a jack that would have exploded on me on the side of the road.

If the second stage is tight, the shaft is probably bent.

You can fix it so that it is usable by just filing out the bush a bit inside the first stage. Be careful with the seal on the second stage as it is unobtainium.
I replaced mine with 2 orings and it works fine!
I did buy another jack and use it in the car and use the one with the bent shaft in the garage.
To come apart the body just unscrews from the base, if it is like the Disco 2 ones which I think it is.

Sounds like your jack has run out of oil, and you pumped the ram up with air. Try refilling it with the correct oil and purging the air out.

I don't reckon the jack had ever been used from new and the 2nd stage seal was very, very, very tight. It took two pumps with the release screw open to bleed it. It EXPLODED. No exageration. Look at the last picture. It's split the 1st stage and blown all the oil over half of the shed.

I didn't even have much pressure on the pump handle either. The pump in the things is capable of produce multiples of the pressure the jack itself can handle.

Split open .... Stuffed, throw-away. A huge shame, it appears to be a new, un-used jack :(
