Removing battery/oil bath air cleaner cradle question

Hi all

Can I remove this without having to remove the guard? Having the radiator out I can see two bolts on the motor side. Are there bolts on the other side?

Just want to paint it!

The legs and lower frame are welded to the chassis, but the battery retainer and filter housing mount will unbolt with 4 bolts and nuts. They are welded together themselves, so clean and paint as one.

You can remove the upper component without removing the guard by undoing those four bolts.

But it helps if you have rubber fingers and a lot of patience. The access to the nuts is pretty limited requiring lots of quarter turns.

Probably easier to remove the mudguard than to try to do it with the mudguard in place.

My limited experience agrees 100% with John.

The mudguard comes off reasonably easy and you'll need access to paint the little "table" that the battery sits on in any case. That takes a lot of patience WITH the wing removed...

Removing the battery surround/air cleaner holder is doable without removing the wing.

But as suggested if you want to paint the legs and base you may find removing the wing is easier.

Thank you all for your replies.

I have just now soaked the bolts in WD40 and will attack them tomorrow. So far any bolt I have touched on this truck has either snapped or been removed using the grinder.

Battery cradle is out! Took a bit of effort along with a bit of skin off the knuckles. I was lazy with this one and sent it off to get powder coated.

It always pays to grab any 7/16" or 1/2" sockets or spanners that I you in the "going cheap" bins at tool shops, as they come in handy to make up special tools to do difficult jobs on Land Rovers. You can cut, bend, and shape spanners, or weld bits onto sockets to access certain difficult bolts and nuts.

I was lucky as I had a long 7/16 flat ring spanner which i could hold with my left hand then used a 1/4 drive ratchet with a long extension arm to reach the nuts underneath (this is on the side up against the guard). This was done while my left foot was standing on the cradle, my right foot was on the LH chassis rail and I was sitting on the radiator support panel!
