View Full Version : Plummetting LR Values

I was told yesterday that the trade-in allowance for V8 Landies is very, very low, e.g., $2000 for a low km 1997 Disco ES!
I'll have one of those!
I'm amazed that people are trading their cars in to save petrol. How much petrol do they have to save to recover the huge loss they've made on the trade-in plus the depreciation on the new one plus the interest on the new one, etc.
If I traded my P38A in, it would be to remove the worries of owning it, not to save petrol. (Besides, it's on LPG style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif )

Not wrong there, I’m just as amused at the difference in price between a new D3 V6 and a D3 diesel.
To take advantage of the savings that a diesel will EVENTUALLY give you, even with the hike in fuel prices, you would have to do at least 40,000km a year and keep it for at least 5 years just to break even.
Not good math in my books, just doesn’t add up. :?

I agree... depreciation is the biggest cost of ownership. However fuel hits people in the face 8O

Will take pix this arvo. I'm in the process of fitting a donut (or doughnut) tank in the wheel well.
For a RR classic, this was my set up:

I'm trying to place that photo - is it in the cargo area of the truck ? Crosswise or front to back ?

You are looking sideways toward the RHS of the truck. See the tailgate support and RH taillight on the right and the rear seat on the left. The rolled up thing on top is the carpet which covers the location where the jack was stored.

Ah yes. I have a mate doing his this way. Its just a real bugger for me because
1) I have an extra row of seats so can't put tank inside.
2) I have EAS which rules out the sills for fuel or gas tanks.
3) Only alternative is replace petrol tank with gas cylinder and put a small petrol tank in behinf rear quarter panel. This option is expensive, doesn;t give very much petrol (or LPG for that matter) range and is therefore prohibitive.
Unless someone has a stroke of genius idea as to a work around I guess I'll just have to stcik to petrol.

I'd believe that. I've been looking around for a D1 and have noticed that you can get a decent low km late 90's V8 for <$10k whereas the cheapest Tdi I have seen is $13k and most expensive was $21k.
Plus there are about 10 V8s to every Tdi for sale.
I imagine they're very flexible with those V8 prices too style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I agree ron, it doesnt really make much sense, but then again i did pay a premium for my TDi disco when i could of had a V8 for half the price. I would sell it for quids now, but when i look back a V8 on gas probably would have been a more viable option. I think the main reason (as said above) is that paying for fuel is something that hits you hard every week, many people are happy to have a car payment come out of their pay each week and not really think about it. It's been another 3 hours since I was last on thsi thread and despite these plummeting LR values, the RR Sport supercharged V8 isn't affordable yet. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

I've heard tell that the supercharged jobbie can run up to 35Lt/100km when pressed hard!
Anyone heard different?
On todays prices for Optimax (which it apparently prefers to guzzle) thats about $0.50/Km!!!!!

Mine has a venturi mixer which is not suitable for the later Bosch EFI engines. Mine is the GEMS system.
I'm also about to replace the single stage converter with a dual stage OMVL converter.
I'm fitting this gas tank in the wheel well.

while BUB only does about 50 kays a fortnight (now)
if your willing to sit behind that caravan for another 35 kays to the next overtaking lane, then you will certainly enjoy the large gaps between fuel stops.
owning a V8 is not about money---
its about options.
Yes, I can overtake that mobile chicane IF I want to,,, and quickly if I NEED to,,,
(dont bring CHIPS into this )

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif Supply might have something to do with that.
We were off roading with a RRS TDV6 this weekend, a mate of Baz's, it did extremely well all weekend, and the driver was a novice, he had never been off road before, ever. I dont know how land rover does it. Matt
