Hi all, I have a '01 P38 4.6.
I replaced my viscous fan hub before going away for the Australia day long weekend. While i was at it I thought I would throw a new fan at it while in there. I ended up purchasing an "Allmakes 4x4 ERR4960" fan.
I fitted it up with no issues, had the engine running in the shed while servicing the auto. When i have taken it for a road test I made it two blocks up the road and have heard a loud bang and found all blades had come off the fan hub and damaged everything in its path including the bonnet.
Question - is this a one off or are there others who have had this issue?
The waterpump was new, the engine mounts were new, no visual defects with the new fan but the plastic looked pretty grainy and poor quality with the blades broken off.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I feel for you mate, that's a nasty thing to have happen
I find most of the aftermarket parts are of variable quality sadly.
Lets hope they cover the damage to your vehicle !

I'm reluctant to buy anything that is not OEM because of poor quality on some aftermarket stuff.

I had a brand new All Makes 4x4 viscous hub spew all it's fluid out on the first drive. The retailer exchanged it with another of the same brand. The new one has been fine for over 100,000 km.

I just joined the forum and I saw this thread late.
I have also bought this combination and I am very unhappy. It didn't disintegrate but it is always very noisy. Especially during acceleration it sounds like a big tornado. Even when the engine is cold and the fan should not turn it keeps turning full speed. So I assume viscous coupling is not functionning properly.
I don't reccomend this product.

Geez that's a bit scary, I have an 01 4.6 as well and recently fitted a new Britpart fan viscous clutch.
The old one was pretty much freewheeling and caused some overheating issues.
With the new viscous clutch in it does now sound like a cyclone, specially at start up and for the first couple of minutes, but after that the noise seems to die down, which does make me wonder about the possiblility of the fan coming apart spinning at such a high rate.
The fan I have would be the original, I haven't noticed any signs of cracking.
Surely you'd think they would test after market parts for suitablitiy, it is possible you just got unlucky and got a defective one.
After reding this, I would probably only fit a genuine fan.
You do have to be wary of after market parts, I recently replaced my panhard rod bushes with after market ones, which caused the dreaded death wobble.
After trying lots of things and getting nowhere, I took it to my local LR specialist, he took the after market bushes out and fitte OEM ones, and the death wobble was gone.
He showed me the bushes on the bench, the rubber was way too soft to do the job properly and caused all the problems.
There is good reason to spend the extra on genuine parts in some of these situations.
Good luck with yours, I hope they cover you for damage to your Rangie.
Cheers, Pete.

Mate I have been told by a supplier that BritPart "manufacture for the lowest cost" so quality is not really an issue for them
I have also had a genuine Expansion tank fail so now I am thinking some second hand parts may be better than some of the new ones !!

Pete, prior to hearing all the bad things about Britparts which I believe are real, I replaced my viscous fan with a britpart 3 years ago....still loud when I start it up and all good.......maybe some are just unlucky.

Thanks Jim, I asked the guys at my parts supplier about the reliability of the brit part fan coupling and they said they have sold several and had no complaints or returns on those. Mine seems to be doing what it supposed to do, at least I know it's working when I start it up :)
Yes may be bad luck for some, maybe it's a quality control issue, who knows?
Cheers, Pete.

Guys it's normal for the fan to roar when first starting up. Every car fitted with a viscous fan hub does this. If it doesn't roar, that is the first sign that things aren't right.

I was told by a good independent land Rover specialist that the trouble is the likes of britpart get half a dozen different manufacturers to make a part, put all the parts in a bin and give them a common part number.
Some of those parts are good, some not so much, but no way to know which you will get.
It's a risk we will all be taking more often as land Rover stops supporting the older parts.

Just recently fitted a new All makes fan only to face it explode and do the under bonnet damage that they can do.
The viscous coupling is a genuine Landrover article, and the waterpump is an Aerotech of recent vintage.(no play in the bearing)
Engine mountings are good, not soft or cracked.
What can the problem be, other than defective fan.
Problem is the bonnet has dents, the top tank of the radiator has the top hose connector smashed off, radiator shrouds totally destroyed, power steering hose pulled from bottle and fluid everywhere. As the vehicle was could not be driven, it meant a flat tray home.
Easily exceeding $600 without bonnet repair or labour.

On the other side of the fence ..
I had to remove my fan(D2 V8) the other day, and it seems someone had lock tighted it on, so no way to remove it(for access) to replace the power steering pump.
I have a spare fan and viscous, so I tried to break the old fan off to get it to the same condition as the OP's photos show, so that I could remove the water pump to get the fan off to get access to replace the power steering pump!
Anyhow, try as I may to snap the blades off by hand(or long bar and 5lb sledge!) .. no bloody way .. had to hack through each entire fan blade to about the last mm or so and then snap each blade off.
They were bloody tough buggers to get off, each one had to be done individually. No idea on the fan make, but I'd guess genuine.
+1 on barnacus's reply that they should roar like a cyclone for a few minutes from cold, then eventually quieten down to a loud hum.
Once the coolant heats up to whatever 'operating temp' is supposed to be, they roar back into cyclone mode.
