Hi All,

Looks like work is sending me to the good ole US of A in November for some training style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif you know sit, roll, beg etc

Anyway as I will have access to duty free and some of the big US chains like Bass Pro etc so what would you buy for a GPS setup :?:

I would like to have moving maps etc out bush and outback touring but also for street directions around town.

Any suggestions

For driving around town I wouldn't go past a TomTom.

However for outback travel & 4wd'ing I doubt it's suitable.. I've heard the Garmin Quest is setup for 4wd'ers though?

Just make sure that anything you buy has a Database for Australia, or even the Southern Hemisphere! There is a lot of really neat gear available in the US, but much of it only works with US memory downloads, like the Garmin StreetPilot2720 (http://www.garmin.com/products/sp2720/) or the touch screen 7" LCDStreetPilot 7200 (http://www.garmin.com/products/sp7200/index.jsp). A lot of the moving map type units are sold at discount retail prices through chain stores, but if you need to special order it or send it back to the factory to get a different database installed, the price suddenly shoots up. Even marine units for fishing boats will have US ports and harbours installed, and to get them changed over to Aus software will negate any saving.
Just be careful, too, with Duty Free purchases as the Govt recently changed the personal allowances. Now, if you exceed the (reduced) allowances, you pay Duty and GST on the WHOLE lot, not just on how much over the allowance you are.
