View Full Version : Another project "Binatang"

Things have been a bit slow on SLOw so I thought I would post up another project.
It been a while since the Royal Review so I am putting a 200TDI into an 88"
I have had for some time.
Jon," Venture Overland" was doing this but seems to have dropped off. I was interested to see how he went as like him I am keeping the LT77 behind the 200TDI instead of the series gearbox I put in Jumbuck the 80"
Years back I bought the Disco engine and box and a Defender engine and box so I have to swap the Defender box onto the Disco engine as it has the shorter bellhousing.
Its been done with 107" cars but I am concerned it may not allow the T.box to be removed in a shorty.
We will see.

If you are not trying to mate the (200) TDi to a series box, have you thought about fitting a 300 instead or is it "fit what ya got" :)

Keith,

Is it a passing coincidence or aptly named intent to call your project "Binatang" - Bahasa Indonesian word for "wild animal"?

Not to be confused with "Bintang" - "star" or a well known souvenir t-shirt embellishment.

Cheers,

Neil

Its"fit what I got".
However the 300 with the turbo would fit better, if anyone wants to swap:cool:
The defender turbo is too high, and the disco sits out to far.

Well, I have a problem.
A few days ago I turned on the computer and it opened with windows 10 installed. I had been ignoring the prompting but it decided to do it by itself.
It told me I could get 8 reinstalled but it would take some time so I went with it.
I am slowly sorting it out but after loading photos , the process of reducing them eludes me. With 8 I could reduce the pixel count to 800 x 600 before posting but I cant find how to do that just now on 10.
Any hints?

Keith,

I had much the same problem a little while back.

It may be possible to sort it out from within Windows, but the resident propeller heads here put me on to Web Resizer - downloadable for free:

Web Resizer - Making Photos Faster - Optimize pictures for websites and email (http://webresizer.com/resizer/)

Works really well for what I need when sending photos to folks with limited mailbox capacity etc.

They did the same to me , intalled windows 10 with out asking . Then it turned off & locked my :angrylock: apps so had to take laptop to computor shop & pay to get it sorted. Then with my desk top my printer wasn,t compatable with 10 so ended up buying new desk top & printer. 4 months on still trying to get used to doing things different to windows 8
This is all too much for us old fellows :(

Hello again.

Out of curiosity I loaded "Binatang" into a couple of Tok Pisin translators and both came back with "insect".

Might stick with the Indonesian - sounds a bit more noble.

I had to google it and came up with

Tok Pisin (English /tɒk ˈpɪsɪn/; Tok Pisin [ˌtokpiˈsin]) is a creole language spoken throughout Papua New Guinea. It is an official language of Papua New Guinea and the most widely used language in that country.

At least I have some clue what you are talking about now :p

Pretty much, but I've also heard it used to mean both bacteria and malarial parasites. I think the meaning is actually pretty wide, and means any sort of wild nasty, but usually these would be insects. I assume that both the Bahasa and Tok Pisin use of the word comes from the Malay.

It does too:D

Actually this thread may have stopped before it started.
I got the photos reduced and they are in my photo folder but when I use the attatchments to the forum then go to browse it cant find them.
It cant get past the date that Windows 10 came on.
I have spent too long mucking about with this, its driving me nuts. I would rather be outside doing some spannering.

Pulled the spring packs to bits, reset them with a sledge hammer over a log, greased them and reassembled.

Well that worked, Just have to find the other photos.
The computer has spent 4 days in the shop to get rid of 10 and back to 8.
The format is different and I have lost all my email folders and contacts list.
O well, could be worse.

Tok Pisin words can have slightly different meanings in different regions.
In New Ireland Binatang includes the Grasshopper which I related the name to.
Smaller pests such as Mossies and sandflies are referred to as "Nat Nats"

Possibly, rather than being a different word, is it possible that nat nat is a more specific word, where for example in English Insect and Mosquito could correctly refer to the same animal? (I do not claim to be any sort of expert in Tok Pisin, and have not really used it for 45 years!)

This should be a shot of the chassis.
Using that old trick of a pipe through the PTO holes as a rotisserie that makes painting and welding easier.
I welded on a replacement rear crossmember and a few patches.

I thought I was getting the hang of this, but although the pic is the right way up in the file it is not here.

When I stripped the body off this chassis, it had an 80" hardtop that had a bit added at the back to fit the 88" It could be converted back if anyone is interested.
See if this pic is the right way.

That worked. So I have to rotate all my pics 90 deg to the right now to get them the right way on here.

Trying to decide which turbo to use.
The Defender one is out because it sits higher than the rocker cover.
I have this engine sitting high, just under the bonnet.
The 200tdi Disco turbo has the dump close to the starter and because this is a Defender gearbox the clutch slave is there as well.
The 300tdi Disco turbo is better placed for the inlet pipes but dumps
on the LH engine mount.

Hi Keith, Finally got my 200tdi installed and to my surprise while fiddling with wires it turned over and started !! No oil, no water, no fuel  but it sounded sweet. I roughly connected everything and test drove it round the paddock and then round the estate ;) As a purchased motor in ''unknown condition'' it runs extremely well and is surprisingly quiet.
I now intend to remove it and paint everything in the engine bay before refitting the motor, I'll fit new timing belt, seals etc before fitting.
It's a 200tdi Discovery motor and I've used a defender manifold and turbo, I've also used series engine mounts fitted to the discovery motor, there is about 1 mm clearance between engine mount and exhaust so will need to address this problem. Also looks like the oil breather on the sump will need moving.

All in all I'm happy with how it's fitted in and it looks like a factory fit :) Sorting the wiring might be another adventure !!

123rover50
5th October 2016, 12:38 AM
That does look good Jerry:D
Why does the top look different to my 200TDI but I see the same turbo set up?

Plumbed in the extra tank though.

Trying to make the cooling system work like the original with the coolant tank feeding into the bottom hose but its all too hard. I might have to solder a pipe into the bottom of the tank somehow.

123rover50
22nd January 2017, 06:43 AM
Coolant tank fitted. I drilled and tapped a hole in the inlet to the water pump.
It can just be seen between the tank and the intercooler. The engine runs nicely even though the cambelt had come off its rails. Put on a new one and will keep an eye on it somehow. Look for fluff in the bottom drain hole. Before I cleaned it it was full of fluff.
Still have to sort the clutch slave issues as in my other thread.
Finish running the brake pipes(ran out of tube)
Sort hand brake linkage etc then may be able to drive it to see if the G,box is any good.

Brake pipes fitted and bled. Got pressure at pedal OK.
Hand brake linkage using a rod between the series handle and Defender drum.

Yet to see how it goes driving.

Took it for a spin in low range today.down the drive and back.
Gearbox seems OK. Synchros work so far.
Only problem is my rod connecting the throttle.
The soft Disco mounts allow a lot of engine movement that transmits itself to the throttle leading to jerky movements etc.
I think the best solution is to make some kind of a cable control out of a disco one perhaps.

Looking good Keith :BigThumb:

I've taken the 200tdi motor back out of the dormobile to give it a freshen up. New seals, timing belt, waterpump etc. I've also stripped it down to give it a coat of paint.

Hopefully I can remember where all the bits go [biggrin] In between coats of paint drying I'm working on the power steering set up, I've used series 3 steering wheel. early defender column, range rover lower steering link and range rover P38 steering box. Surprisingly this all fits together perfectly and I'm now ready to weld chassis plates and fit steering box.

After reading lots of bad reports, I was also pleasantly surprised how easy the original steering relay was persuaded to leave the chassis. :ohyes:

The antiburst locks are a bolt on replacement for the old ones except for the location of the keyhole. May need to ease the corners of the lock plate a little - it is a long time since I did it but I remember something was a little tight.

123rover50

Gave it a good pressure wash and it looks not too bad.
Under all the layer of paint I can just read the original sign writing. At first I thought it was Field Survey Unit, now not so sure.
Survey Unit looks OK but the first word finishes with a D but seems to have an O in there.
Any ideas?

Dont know why the pic went there.

Nearly ready for a Roadworthy. Just waiting on a pair of Trico asjustable wiper arms.
Took it for a spin to warm the gearbox oil then tried to drain it.
The main drain plug came out OK but the filter drain took heating with a hot air gun and a 3 ft breaker bar to move it.
First drain since I bought the box, so a pig in a poke. The filter looked good though.
T,box a different story. The drain plug went round and round.
Dropped the plate off to look inside, everything looked OK and not much on the magnet.
Had to drill the plug then with some work with a die grinder I could lever it down from the top with a screwdriver on the gear.
Now to buy a Re coil set but I dont know the thread pitch. Looks to be 12mm something.
Anyway a relief to get it out.
I will buy a day permit to drive into town for the RWC maybe next week or the week after if I can get the right helicoil.

I must be losing the plot.
When I first mated engine to G,box I left the bottom three studs out. I noticed yesterday, and thought that I must have forgotten them. No problem , I will do it now. Not easy, the holes are pilot holes only and are not threaded.

Perhaps its because its a Defender box mated to a Disco Flywheel housing. Are the bolt holes in different places.?

123rover50
9th May 2017, 07:59 AM
Not wanting to pull the box again and there not being space to turn a T handle on a Tap, I made up an extension out of an old rifle barrel piece.
Firstly drilling it to accept an 8.5mm drill shank then drill and tapping two holes to accept grub screws 90 degrees apart to mate with flats I ground on the drill shank. It being alloy I could rotate by hand and enlarge the holes.
Next open it to accept the shank of the 10mm x 1.5 tap I luckely had. This I secured with the grub screws and was able to tap the 3 holes.
Next cleaned them with brake cleaner, blew them with air then screwed in the studs coated with Locktite. I did this with two nuts locked together at the end of the stud.

On the discovery motor / Series housing conversion, there are 4 holes that need to be drilled at the bottom of the housing. I believe the threads are in the motor [bighmmm] In the uk a lot of people don't bother though !!

The dealer had gone broke and out of business so I could not replace the pump. I have since bought another system and so had these solar panels kicking around.
Two panels rated at 120 watts at 19.5 volts.
I put one on the back of the 6x6 camper and put the other on here. Running through a Dingo controller to a 100 amp AGM battery.
Keeps the fridge going night and day when I have it on.
