Hi All
new to the forum.Got a quick question.
I am really interested in buying a Perentie (Cargo) from Grays online (Minto).
looking through gumtree and carsales these vehicles are selling for 15K+ but selling on Grays online for about less then 7k.
why the difference? is it cause it cost alot to make them drive able on NSW roads?
OR are people re selling them on KM bases and making profits?

When you bid at Greys, your bid price is not the final price.
What you pay Greys is bid+6%+10%. Then there is the roadworthy (pink slip?) process (may require work and parts replacement) and then registration costs.
For example, the winning bid for my Perentie was about $15,000. By the time it was on the road, it had cost me about $20,000 in total.
If you specifically want a Perentie direct from the ADF (possibly with log books), get one from the auctions. If you just want a Perentie as a blank canvas to create your ultimate 4WD, you may get a better bargain from the private market.
Do the research. Crunch the numbers.

And there is also a few that have been on these websites for a long time and will probably be there for much longer. Auction prices also vary a lot. I think prices at the auction are controlled by the demand and as many people buy from Auction without seeing the car first, in a lot of cases the price payed is higher than the cars value. If you buy from auction, inspect the car. Buy the perentie buyers guide and do a lot of research because ive been to the last two auctions and ive inspected the cars and i can tell you, I'm surprised that some sold for what they did.

Thanks guys.
Great help.
Been to the auction few times. The thing is they dont let you start the vehicle. Cant even check for leaks cause the vehicles are cleaned so throughly top to bottom. Only thing you can check is KM, dents here and there and how many holes in canvas cover. 90% of the tyres look brand new.
So there could be a chance that the vehicle looks mint but something is wrong with the engine.
Where can i get the service history? Is it that plate thats stuck under the driver's seat with marking on it?

If it has a blue slip the engine is probably ok, however if you buy privately you can at least drive itand have a knowledgeable person check it for you. I bought one privately and it has worked out well. Just remember, asking prices are just that, and some appear very optimistic - that's why they're still on the market :).

Don't worry too much about the engine. The 4bd1 is bullet proof.
If you do go to the auctions you can look at the log book for the vehicle you are interested in.
Look for something with a new gearbox as that alone will cost $3500 to rebuild. Also check the chassis for cracks and bends. Very expensive to repair because they are galvanised.
Everything else usually doesn't break or is reasonable to rebuild, including body panels.
Good luck

While they don't let you start them, there is nothing stopping you. ;). It's not like they can lock them up and remove the ignition keys. :D
I know of some that have. When they come running, just apologise and move on.

I'm going to get shouted down by the Perentie guys here, but, I think they are all overpriced. IMHO I think they are worth 3-5K. And I think buying a 6x6 is asking for long term problems with parts supply.
I've seen how they are driven but admittedly they are serviced well. If not over serviced.
I had 64 vehicles inc trailers and mogs on my account and having driven almost all of them I can tell you they are ruff to drive and would be uncomfortable to own long term.
My advice, for what it's worth is buy a county with a 4BD1 and start from there. You might end up 20k out of pocket in the end but you will have a far better vehicle.

I think you're right. I'll have two, please. FFRs with winch.

No more than any other vehicle that is over six years old unless it's an old Ford or old Holden.

To tell you the truth, the 6x6 is so much more comfortable than the other Landrovers I have. So comfortable, my friend John nodded off in it when we drove to Hamilton.
I don't think the 4x4s are much different to the civvy 110s.
When can I collect my two $3k FFRs?

I think you are quite mad, and you need some professional help:D
Just out of interest, and I'm genuinely interested but who supplies the axles for the widened diffs?

IMHO the Perentie 4x4 is the best value LR ever sold to the public anywhere in the history of LR.
Yeah its got armstrong steering and is basic/draughty/noisey. Yeah. :p

I would agree, basically for simplicity, reliability and offroad capability that is hard to beat.

I'm not saying I don't think that are a fantastic 4WD. They're probably the best off road capable machine going. In fact I loved instructing the basic driver courses because you could get so much out of them.
I just think that they are well over priced. I can't see where the money is compared to other 110s or defenders of similar specs.

Judging from the prices paid at the auctions, it would seem there are many that disagree with you.
I think they are overpriced but, hey, if you want one, you gotta pay the dollars.

Market Value of Perenties.
The results of the AFM sales obviously go close to satisfying the legal definition of current market value.
Market value being the sum that an informed and willing, but not over anxious purchaser is willing to pay to an informed and willing, but not over anxious vendor, rather than miss out on the purchase.
It is possible that it could have been distorted by the fine print in the auction conditions which define the "buyers costs" at greysonline auctions. This distortion is up to 16.7% , being the additional amount that has to be paid to graysonline and which actual sum is undisclosed at point of bid. However, if we assume that purchasers are "informed" as per the above definition the distortion may be zero.
The lower prevailing prices achieved at the recent A.W.O.L. sale demonstrated the above market value definition exactly. That there was some anxiousness on the part of the vendor was demonstrated by the fact that such a large quantity was dumped on the market in one hit. Most buyers walked away with excellent buys, some even with multiple purchases. None remained unsold.
The definition is also clearly confirmed by the amounts paid on open maret resale generally which tend to vary mostly due to varying anxiousness of vendors. If you find someone anxious to unload you may get a good buy.
So when an individual takes the view that they are only worth $X to him - that personal judgement has absolutely nothing to do with market value.
So I would not "shout down" a personal view such as landy has put, I'm just stating the reality of the present market where open market sales as low as he has specified just won't happen.
There are no crystal balls - future market values may decline, stay stable or increase, who knows ?

My brother owned a Lada Niva. Wonderful machine, much like a tractor. Plastics seemed to be similar to that used in biscuit packets, except black, but apparently it would go anywhere. Can't remember how much he sold it for but he had it for quite a few years and got more than he paid for it. (This was some time ago, I see there are some on gumtree for <$1000).
