View Full Version : D4 Windscreen Wipers stopping

Hi All

I am having issues with the wipers on my D4 in the way that they keep stopping.

I have researched other threads on this form relating to wiper issues bit none seem to relate to the problems i am facing. If there are any threads that would help me i'd appreciate if someone could send me a link.

Firstly, i have a MY11 D4 TDv6, which i purchased January 2016. I purchased the vehicle interstate. After a week of owning the vehicle i noticed the wipers did not work at any setting on the stork.

Now the first things i checked were the fuses and relay switches. These were all fine.

Next i thought it was the wiper motor. So with the assistance of a friend with electrical engineering knowledge we removed the wiper motor and managed to successfully get it working by connecting direct to the battery. So we thought we'd eliminated this as the problem. We reconnected the plug that feeds back to the fuse box but the wipers still wouldn't go.

We then removed the tape from the wiring loom between the wiper motor and fuse box, but couldn't find any breaks / deterioration in the wiring that could be causing the signal from not getting through. We re-taped up the wiring.

We also tested the signal from the stork to ensure that was working properly and all was fine there.

The final thing we briefly looked at was the connection of the wiring loom into the fuse box. We disconnected the battery and looked at removing the fuse box but ran out of time.

We reinstalled the motor and reconnected the battery and suddenly the wipers started working.

However, after testing a few times with changing the stork settings and turning the vehicle off & on the wipers stopped working again. We removed the motor again and rechecked the connections and everything else we had already done, but still couldn't find the problem.

Anyway, eventually we got to a point of getting the wipers to work reliably after we had put all the parts back together.

After 3 months the wipers decided not to work again. They had been working the day before but the next day they wouldn't go.

They would always stop in the normal off position and not halfway through a cycle midway over the windscreen.

Again I removed the relays and disconnected the battery and they eventually started to work again.

However, in the last week they have stopped working 3 times now and so far i have not managed to get them working again.

My thoughts are now turning to an issue with the fuse box, or if there's an issue with the vehicles computer.

So i'm asking if anyone has experienced a similar issue and can give me some suggestions of what to try next. Or generally any recommendations from anyone with the technical knowledge of this area of the D4 as to what I can try next before i have to put it into the garage.

Appreciate any help :)

Cheers
Lee.

How long since you purchased it - if from a dealer you have a 3 month statutory warranty

Purchased Mid Jan 2016 so just outside the 3 month warranty period.

Flash the software.

Flash the software.

You'd have a bit of explaining to do if the family came home while you were doing that.

Are you using the wipers on auto or manual?

When they don't work, do they work using the wash function?

Hard reset? Any faults being logged? How's the battery? Ummm.... was the wiper switch itself ruled out? I know you checked everything, but definitely no wiring rubbed through or a dodgy earth?

I bet you haven't tried swearing loudly and chucking stuff...

Have you tried locating the fuse for the wipers???It could be damaged or have bad contacts allowing power at times then not, worth changing to rule it out.

Hi Graeme

The wipers dont work when set to either manual or Auto.

The wash function works but the wipers don't move.

Hi Stuart02

I did a hard reset over the weekend but this didnt resolve the problem.

We have tested the signal being received from the wiper switch so quite happy this is ok. Also, i can hear the relays clicking when i move the wiper switch.

As for the swearing, i have thrown plenty of that at the wipers but they are being pretty stubborn. Will probably continue this exercise though just incase they decide to respond and start working.!!

I'm thinking i might re run the wiring as a just in case so can then rule that out.

In case the relay has failed contacts I suggest that you jump the wiper relay to see if they then work, or at least swap the relay with another.

With the relay jumpered, is there power at the wiper motor?

Did you check the bolts that hold the wiper arms in one of the threads I linked???
Ive seen that problem in other vehicles.

I will be having another go at fixing this again at the weekend so will try replacing / swapping the relays to see if this is the problem.

We have already bypassed the relays to confirm the wiper motor works, but will go through all these tests again just to confirm.

I have tried the bolts but this didn't work either.

Will post an update after the weekend, hopefully with a positive outcome!!

Given Murph hasn't been on in over 7 months your chance of getting a reply is slim.
I'm "ass-u-me-ing" you have the same problem? Have you scanned for fault codes?
