Hi all
I am in the process of replacing the engine and gearbox mounts and as always with this truck, it's a voyage of discovery.
I replaced the drivers side engine mount - no worries, but the LH side struck me by surprise when I removed it to find it had been trimmed down to fit! Engine is original (as per numbers on REMLR)
Is this correct? I note that after removing the mount from the bracket (Another job for the grinder) i could see a slot in the shape of a "T" which looked original.
Next question - I was going to remove the gearbox cross member to make the job of replacing the gearbox mounts a bit easier, but I see that there is a bead of weld joining the cross member to the chassis. Is this correct and is it necessary?
Thanks heaps

Hi 86mud,
I've got 2 x Series II's - and the engine mount that you have is certainly different to both of mine... Both of mine are big enough to fit a standard engine mount (completely round - not like your cut down version)..
As for the gearbox - on both of my II's - the gearbox cross member is welded on.
I believe that on military vehicles it was changed to be a removable cross member - making it much easier to replace when damaged or for when removing the gearbox.
I know that changing the cross member so that it's removable is also a popular modification.
Your pic is interesting - as you say, there certainly appears to be a bead of weld there... So maybe it isn't a remove-able cross member?
Hopefully somebody else can come along and shed some more light...
Cheers,
GG.

Yep, removable crossmember is a common and worthwhile conversion. Just do it properly - the one on my Sons series 3 was done really badly and required considerable work to make good.
The engine mount is a mystery to me - never seen one like that before.

Could it be that the modified gearbox crossmember was installed slightly too far forward or backward, and that the fix was to offset the front engine mount?

I agree with the previous posters. never seen an engine mount like that.
Removable cross members were only fitted to some (all?) Lightweight military Landrovers (very rare here), but quite a few have been converted, although as with other modifications, some are well done and some not.

A mates ex mil series 3 109 had the mod done when he got the vehicle. To the best of his knowledge and according to the previous owner who had purchased it straight from service, the mod was done by the military.

The first pic just looks like the standard mount that bolts onto the motor, but it has been trimmed up for some reason and the anti vibe rubber mount has been attacked as well.
Maybe for some reason the motor wasn't in alignment and the anti vibe mount needed to be offset so one side was trimmed.
Nothing surprises you with series Land Rovers, one of the wrecks I have here has had pieces of steel welded in to replace broken rubber mounts.
As for the cross member pic, the bolts are confusing if it is still welded in situ, unless someone decided to do a bolt on conversion, then got a bit nervous and decided to run a bead of weld on it as well.
Cheers, Mick.

I ended up using a gearbox mount for the LH engine mount. The gearbox mounts are slightly smaller in diameter and therefore no trimming was necessary as per the original mount )(in the picture above) that I removed.
I'll just leave the gearbox cross member as is.

Is having different mounts each side of the motor going to cause problems ? I guess the standard level of vibration is outside what's acceptable on a modern vehicle so any extra shouldn't be a problem.
Just went down the back shed and took a couple of photo's.
Series III FFR removable cross-member.

Another removable cross-member that came with a car I purchased.

Both seem different to yours, probably best to leave it alone unless you feel the need to remove the gearbox ion a regular basis.
