I have a couple of series land rovers but am getting interested in The Discovery. I had one years ago and am thinking of getting another. I like the idea of a really old one. When did the Discovery come to Australia? Do 1989 3 door models come onto the market in Australia? Does anyone on the forum own one and what are their experiences? many thanks Scott

91 is the earliest year we got them and they are scarce.

I have got a 3 door built date 6/91 109776 Personally i prefer to drive it above any other vehicle i have access to. I am one to keep things original but as i do use this vehicle in 4x4 situations, i have found that i am needing to upgrade/modify a number of things. Those being adding some lift (2 in tough dog shocks and springs) Removed 55 mm out of the guard arch and added bolt on flares. Pushed the wheel centers out and spun the standard rims to create off set. 109777 Added 32in mtr Wrangler kevlar tires etc. As things move along i have found in reasonably heavy 4x4ing i have recently been let down by the standard drive line, that being disintegrating the standard rear differential center to which i intend to replace that with an aftermarket air locker and axle upgrade.

The only reason i would want a pre-update d1 would be so it could go on club plates, the post 94 vehicles are so much better in every respect.

I got a post update 95 after looking for a pre 3 door. Couldn't find one.

The 95 updated dash has curled in the sun and it has ancient airbags armed to do god knows what. So I'm not convinced it's any better than pre update

The pre update was 200tdi (if looking at diesel) which is a great old motor.

3 door for the rarity makes it quite attractive.

I also have a 95 four door as well and i have no interest in being able to drive it at all. Truth is i intend to pull the motor out, fit it in the 93 and wreck the rest of it out. So if you need any parts, yell out :)

Ive got a '93 disco 1 that I bought in '08 with only 136k on the clock from the original owner. I've only put 40,000km on it since then - it has to be one of the lowest km discos going around :D

love the old girl.

I loved my 93 Rossi,,

I'd never had a LR before that so the whole dash thing with the grab handle was great.. Loved the single spoke wheel with the big LR badge. I even loved the way it rolled around corners,, and the way its feet kept touching ground when asked.

I really liked our 95 300Tdi and wish we had kept it as we didn't get much trade-in on the Defender.

I recently purchased a may 91 discovery 2 door from an old couple who had it since new. Low Ks, service history and stock standard.

Any chance you could post up some photos for posterity? If it is the one in your avatar, I think I saw it on Gumtree and it had full side decals I hadn't seen before - with a compass on?

The 'Compass' cars were the Orienteer Pack IIRC.

Feb '91 is when the Disco first appeared at JRA (I was a 2nd yr app). All the original press cars had RRX### number plates & the MD took one home the first night with the Land Rover badges taped up.

Until a couple of years ago there used to be a blue 3 door Disco driving around Warrnambool that had the "compass" decals on it. LRT

Found a picture of the Orienteer pack (at the rear):

It's hard to find much information on - it can't have lasted long.

From memory, the Orienteer came out after a few months of the launch of the Disco here. I can only assume that LR thought potential buyers were holding back until the release of the 5 door model with the 92MY & tried to jazz up the 3 door version.
If that was the case, your ad would make sense with the standard 5 door alongside a fancy 3 door.

I actually have what appears to be an incomplete set of new Compass decals. There's some damage to one decal but if there's someone here who has an Orienteer & will use them, send me a PM.

I thought the wheels on the 3 door were a late model thing, learn something new everyday

A '91 Orienteer has popped up on Gumtree. I'll post the pics for posterity; it looks fairly original.

The ad says it is one of 75, anyone know how true that is?

One of my brothers has a '93 4 door, manual, petrol,he bought when it was 1 yr old.

It has done around 350K,but the paintwork is now completely stuffed, but inside it is in great condition.

The only major thing that has gone wrong was weeping heads, reasonably easy fix, and new cams at the same time.

He does all the work on it himself.

And looks after the Series 1 in my sig.[biggrin]

In fact, the original paint on the S1 is in similar condition to the paint on the D1...
