View Full Version : How did you get your no. 5 registered?

I'm at a loss, I've been helping a mate do up this no. 5 (read: I've done it up for him, as I'm the one with the know how).

I spent all of today trying to find someone who would blue slip it and issue a VIN. No one want's to touch it, for a few reasons:

- axle is too wide, so the tyres stick out past the guards, are you all adding flares? I've already put mudflaps on it.

- tare weight is 360kg, which APPARENTLY means it now needs brakes as it's over 340kg (can't find that in ADR's, and even then they aren't retrospective as far as i know).

- coupling is bolted on (I've made a gooseneck to replace the lunette, that takes a standard 50mm ball coupling), everyone is freaking out about the bolts holding that on.

- It has no identifiers, but is neither new or home built, so no one wants to do it that way.

- Don't know what year it was built, to apply relevant ADR's.

The whole thing is an abortion, I can't believe I let him buy it, and then offered to help get it roadworthy (which he'd be lost if I hadn't).

Another mate grabbed one when AFM were doing blue slips, much easier then...

You couldn't give me one after this disaster.

Is there someone out there that understand what these are? That they've been on the road for more than 40 years, and isn't going to be a neo-nazi when looking at it?

Between the condition it was in and these issues it sure does sound like you have run over a black cat with it.

I know things are different in a Vic, but the one thing I did have to do was put flares on my Sankey trailer as the new tyres I fitted were well outside the guards. Not sure on how others have gone.

The rest of the process in Vic is easy so no dramas getting a VIN or rego so can't help there sorry.

surely you can list it as home built....

if tyres are hanging out try series rims as i believe the offset is narrower and the tread should sit inside the guard

Did you get it sorted? Just bought one myself so curious to see how you went.

Sorry I just found this thread.

The No5 are listed under manufacturer ADI (Australian Defense Industries) in the RTA makes and models database.

Yes the tyres do stick outside the wheel arches, this is because the Army stuck the 6" ROH rims equivalent of the those on the Perentie to give common spare wheel and to bring the trailer track closer to the 110 track. If you want it to comply you either need to stick mudguard extensions on or re-fit a pair of the original Series IIA 5.5" +ve offset rims off a series 109. (What the owner does later is up to him).

I also stuck a pair of mudflaps and added front an side reflectors to finish off the compliance issues.

Got it done last week actually...

Found a guy that knew what was what and which way was up, etc etc.

Ended up blue slipping it as home built with a new VIN. He overlooked the guards, and I'd already put mud flaps and reflectors on it. Registered it with the pintle lunette on it and added my custom coupling bracket later.

All good.

But there is no way I would ever recommend anyone buy a number 5, other than as a collectors item or farm hack (to never be on the road).

I was going to do one up, or one of the number 4 Jeep trailers we have, but give me two weekends and a welder and I'll have built a trailer 3 times as good.

Agreed, I owned one for a couple of months in 2014 then sold to a mate for cost price ($309 at auction!). Possibly the most useless box trailer I've come across, until modifications such as a tailgate and spare wheel holder to give some drawbar weight are added. Until then, they make for a mediocre boat and a mediocre trailer.

They have far too many problems when used behind a 110, not the least that they are a heavy trailer without brakes where half the legal GTM is used with the weight of the trailer itself.

I have two and a workshop variant, but only as IsuzuToo Eh suggests for their collector value. In fact even for that issue, after having it almost jackknife in an emergency stop on a motorway, I now only use it empty and at local shows.

Just finished 3,400 km off road and on road towing a number 5 with it's army pintle hitch and NATO plug with (home made) adaptor. The trailer remains completely original. Canvas cover fitted and loaded with an extra land rover spare wheel in the front of the trailer. Carrying a load of modular boxes which fit between the internal wheel arches and a larger size box for the front and rear of the trailer. Gas cylinder clamped inside, bolted to the holes along the leading edge of the internal guards. The trailer was brilliant. No dust inside, superb tracking and following along all roads but really came into its own with river crossings and everything remained dry and dust free. The other trailers on the trip did nowhere as well and were problematic. You do get a few strange looks, as a land rover owner I enjoy envy however the only issue I have is the length of the drawbar in car parks. The advantages far outweigh the issue of length. Best $409 I ever spent!

Thanks for that, I pick mine up on Monday and then will head off to KLR Automotive for the Blueslip. I was going to swap the plug but the adapter sounds interesting, where did you get the socket for the plug to make an adapter?

Here's mine, plan to leave it pretty much as it is, will be towing behind my JK (short wheelbase) Wrangler Rubicon.

I don't use my no 5 for the same thing as my box trailer but I do use it for camping quite a lot full nsw rego keeps sleeping gear and swags dry. No modifications at all even the original single tail/brake light. Tyres are outside the guards but never been a problem, lunette and nato plug just right for the series or use a trailer board if towing with the disco. No 5,s have their uses but they are a little more specialised than a box trailer:)

Nice trailer. Well done.
The sockets are quite costly but you may get lucky.
There should be a terminal strip on the underside of the trailer towards the rear. I would recommend you attach some 5 core trailer loom (available from Autobarn, Supercheap, Repco, etc.), run it up the drawbar and attach a civillian plug (that will fit in the socket on your Jeep).
If you have no intention of using the military plug, you may consider removing the plug and loom altogether (in one piece). Keep it in case you decide to sell the trailer later or sell it.

Yep, I'll think I'll remove in one piece and put aside. I'm also thinking of removing the rear round reflectors and replacing with a similar size combination reflector/stop/taillight lenses. Something that will preserve the look but give it a little more presence on the road and bush.

Something like these. But I'll have to wait and see what I can get to fit and still look right. They are the right diameter but I don't know if there is a hole in the reflector mount that they can drop into or if they need to be slimmer.

My rear setup is the single taillight.

Interesting mod to the drawbar for the m/cylinder coupling.

Interesting mod to the drawbar for the m/cylinder coupling.

It has a longer axle, to suit defender track. With Ranger rover disc brakes. Was being towed behind a 110 County, but my Puma 90 seems to have the tow hitch a fair bit lower so I had to customise the hitch again.... :(

I've also extended the mud guards to cover the wheels - more to protect my car than anything else.... main roads didn't even want to see the trailer when I got it registered.

You could have flipped the tongue over which lifts your towball height by about 3" and saved the need to modify the drawbar. It's what I did on my D4 which also has a too low ball when used in the standard configuration.

BTW Was it a 1/2 ton workshop platform trailer originally? It's unusual for an original No5 trailer to have shock absorbers.

Ahhh yes. I could have flipped the hitch and that would be great for clearance off road but that would mean that I can't have the jerry can carrier. Even now the clearance to the brake reservoir is marginal.

The trailer is ex raaf. The po added the shocks

Finally got mine blue-slipped, changed the lunette to a McHitch, added mudflaps, reflectors, new taillights and longer rated chains. Other than that it was easy ;) Now it also sits level with the Jeep

Got my No.5 regoed today, ARN 176464. Walked into services SA, filled out the form, put down the chassis number, weight, colour, manufacturer and date manufactured, 1969, and paid the money. New plate, no inspection. Cool. BUT, if it was made after 1986 it would need a vin number and plate affixed and an inspection, Blah blah...
I think its a good outcome.
Looking forward to my first tow of it.

Cheers Rod
