Hi , I changed the wheels on my 2015 110 . I was surprised how tight the wheel nuts were . When I say tight I mean standing on a Snap-on breaker bar . It wasn't a big deal , just very tight . I put on a set of 20mm offset rims with 265x75 x16" tyres . They just keep inside the guards , but only just . The turning circle also improves as well . No rubbing on the radius arms either . The bolts on the swivel housing are adjusted in . All in all very pleased , looks good as well !!.. Jim :)

Sometimes i think service departments with their rattle guns get carried away. I rotate my tires myself and once had to stand on my wheel spanner too. Jeep wheel nuts have a cap on them and have had them break off after a visit to the dealers for a service. Imagine being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire and one of the nuts has a cap broken off. For that reason i too bought a Snap-on breaker bar with two socket sizes, one for the original size nut and one for the hex nut under the cap as well. When ever i get a service i ask that all wheel nuts are tightened by hand and not with a rattle gun

This is a good point about workshops , and rattle guns . I have been with a mate who had a puncture fixed , anyway he had a problem with that wheel . and had to change it . He only had the Land Rover factory wheel brace , we could not get the wheel nuts undone , the wheel brace was twisting before the nuts would let go . So my friends give your wheels some love ! Check you can undo them , put a little smear of grease on the threads , and a little on the outside of the nuts , as they can corrode . You don't wont to be stuck somewhere remote and can't get a wheel off !!.. Jim :)

My local tyre shop owner has a rule for his workers that no rattle guns can be used to tighten up wheel nuts.
This thread has reminded me I must do a tyre rotation.

Hope my photo attachment shows up.
Standard wheel nut for my Jeep is 19mm and the nut under the cap is 18mm. I ended up buying a breaker bar with 18 & 19mm sockets as sometimes you don't notice they have been damaged and broken off and would hate to be stuck in a situation where I couldn't get the wheel off with a flat.
Has anyone had the cap break off their defender wheel nuts and if so what size is the hex nut under it as am looking to buy a couple of sockets to fit my defender too

In my work ( bus sales) we had a customer try and tell us our wheel nuts were failing. They were cracking at almost 12 months of age. It was found they were using rattle guns with torque settings 3 times the recommended torque and they wondered why they cracked.

Pathetic thing is - if they use Twist Sticks with a rattle gun they'll be torqued correctly as well.
For a small outlay they would never cause a problem.
(Personally I prefer they use a torque wrench)

My uncle who retired a few years back worked as a mechanic at a bus company for over 40 years . They had to torque all wheels nuts on there buses , I believe they still do . Jim

Maintenance Manual instructions actually say this.

I bought a 3/4" sliding bar and a long rattle gun socket to do mine after bending the LR spanner.
The tyre place had ruined 5 nuts using the rattle gun but paid for replacements and undid all wheels and torqued them by hand.
I too would like to know what size the nut is under the cover just in case....

PS. I've got a couple of the ruined nuts somewhere so I'll take the cover off one and advise what size it is.

Whenever I get tyres done, the first thing I tell them is no rattle guns when putting them back on.
I've caught a few and then gone off at them when a rattle gun is used. They've then sat there and tried to tell me they "under torque" them doing them up, then torque wrench them as a check. Funnily enough, it clicks and hasn't moved. "yeah right, now undo them ALL, and do the job properly,,, that's what I'm paying you for".
It all boils down to lazy arse people who can't, or won't, do their jobs properly. Procedure's are there for a reason.

Same here,if I buy tyres or rotate them I watch from outside to make sure they don't rattle them.I also torque the nuts to 100Nm and smear with a dab of anti-sieze on both my defenders, never had a problem ever with stuck nuts:p or wheels coming off. Pat

I just walk in and do it all myself [emoji41]
The joys of learning how to do tyre fitting, balancing and wheel alignments at a mates workshop.
Been fitting my own rubber for decades.

Both Jeep and Land Rover have wheel lugs that have the stupid pressed chrome overlay. Getting rid of the locking wheel lug is something I also recommend to customers/owners, again as you say image being in the middle of nowhere and the locking lug adapter splits or the pins break off (and they do).
How ridiculous that any repairer hasnt trained their monkeys not to rattle tight wheel lugs on an alloy wheel. There is a torque setting for a reason, as in 1, you have some hope of removing them on the side of the road and 2, all lugs are done evenly to prevent the wheel from being distorted. So if working monkeys cant be trained to use a torque wrench, then you can get torque adapters extensions that are pre-set and colour coded.
