Best location to install UHF

Wanting to get an in car UHF rather than use the handheld all the time. What have others found is the best install location for the head unit in a Discovery 4? Not after all bells and whistles unit. Will probably go for a compact GME unless others have other ideas. It's mainly the best location that I'm trying to figure out.

ps, I tried an advanced Google search specifying just this domain but nothing came up. I find that in searching for terms on this site that it brings up mostly irrelevant stuff, so it's easier to ask at times.

Here is a good start, albeit it is for an Icom 450 but is general enough to give you some good ideas. You will find there is a preference for mounting the head under the passengers front seat as there is already a mounting platform there that can be used. In the case of the Icom, a fairly simple (in the end) process to attach the Icom cradle onto this. I made a bracket and put mine in the space where the rear air unit would be (if I had one) behind the panel on the passenger side of the cargo area.

Reasons I did this:

1. already had power right there from Traxide kit to auxiliary power socket;
2. my antenna is mounted at the back on the roof rails so short and very easy run to the head unit;
3. it's higher than under the seat so in the (hopefully extremely unlikely) event of being stuck in water at that level the radio will be on longer; and
4. only had to run 1 (microphone - ethernet) cable from head unit to console plug for the mic socket (which I put in the cup holder)

Bracket under the seat is a nice option too - all comes down to personal choice.

I have a small GME unit mounted to side of the centre console near the front of the seat. Only disadvantage is that I sometimes accidentally turn it on when leaning over to the passenger seat.

I mounted one of the GME units up under the RH side of the dash hanging of the bracket that others have also used.
Thought I might have to add a speaker but the built in unit has been fine.
Ran the cable for the Mic/Remote through the steering column and put a socket on the LH side.

Works for me as a normal sized person.
I did have a visitor driving recently that stands well over 2mtr tall and with his excessively long legs the cable was a bit low.

To give you more location options it would be best to look at a remote head unit and not one with all the knobs and display on it. This way you can put it anywhere you like. I have a pre existing unit that I mounted on the cabin side of the large flap underneath the steering wheel, but with a remote unit you could mount so it's up inside the dash and completely out of the way. I mounted mine under the passenger seat and as per photos. Look up LRD414 in members rides. Scott has a good write up on the install if you decide to go down that path.

I would have thought in the shed, the lighting is generally better, you are out of the rain, access to tools etc and just a nice place to install stuff...

I'm using the portable 80 channel ICom but with a bracket mount (ClickOn, so I can remove it without leaving marks) to the left of the console about where the left side passenger AC control is, and wired it back to a fuse that is only on when the car is started (as the built in battery keep it running). Also have the optional remote mike attached, so much like a permanent mount.

Downside is poorer range (due to internal mounting), but I figured if really necessary, I can walk it up a hill; most of the time, with convoys, it's not a problem. This way, if the car electrics die, I still have a functioning UHF.

Remote head Uniden installed inside dash on RHS. Microphone cable comes out of lower dash panel on LHS microphone clips on to ClicOn bracket on LHS of dash.
