After Market Batteries

G'day All,

In 2008 I purchased a trade quality 18v cordless drill kit. It came with two batteries that I suspect are finally giving up the ghost. The manufacturer no longer make the style of battery (it's two models ago), but there are some after market ones available.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these. A battery is going to cost about $80. A new drill with two batteries is about $600, not to mention any skins that would also need to be replaced.

Yep, I'd be looking at getting them repacked with new cells, I've done it to a couple of my battery packs now. There is a huge difference in cell quality though so don't skimp on them, buy good quality.

I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs, However.......
There's been a growing number of on board(aircraft) Lithium fires caused by aftermarket batteries . Most seem to come from China.


If you do buy aftermarket, don't store the batteries together and always pack them so their easily obtainable.

I have both genuine and compatible aftermarket Makita batteries. When charging a hot genuine battery, the charger will recognise that it is hot, start on a fan only cycle, then charge the battery. When charging a hot aftermarket battery, the charger will see it as a fault, not charge the battery and not run the fan. Once the battery has cooled down, it will then charge normally.

2008? Are these NiMH batteries?

If so get them repacked with Sanyo or similar. Do a search on the net. NiMH technology has supposedly come a very long way since lithium appeared on the scene.

I have this problem with an 18V German AEG drill, one battery is still kinda usable and when it packs up I'll be getting them both repacked.
