View Full Version : LED interior lights

I recently received an emaill from older brother (who has a MY15 D4) telling me he had replaced all his interior globes with bright white LED's and how much better the interior lighting was now. Naturally I took this for the blatant challenge it was (for me to do likewise) and "hmmphed" as I planned my next trip to Autobahn or similiar. :p

So, popped into said Auto Retail outlet today, raised an eyebrow at the price of a silly little T10 wedge globe (LED) - oh and a festoon needed for the rear cargo area - and thought better be worth it. Especially when I counted as follows within the interior of a MY12 L332:

each door has a T10 wedge globe (bottom)
front dash (front facing) each side has a T10
rear cargo area - 2 T10 wedge and 1 festoon 36mm
roof front - 3 x T10 wedge
roof centre - 3 x T10 wedge

Good grief. :o At $10 a pair that added up.

I decided to skip 4 of the 6 roof (reading lights are never used) and the rear cargo area as I have a LED strip in there already which lights it up a treat.;)

Result?....hmm. Well, it does sort of "modernise" the interior (bright white light) and does mean the lights all "match" (ie the rear cargo strip light matches all lights) but I wouldn't say I sat back and said "Wow" (which I did incidentally when I added the long flexible LED strip light across the tailgate like Graeme's.

So, there is my 2c worth! Dont bust your guts on this "upgrade". Just do the cargo area ;)

cheers

I totally agree.

I changed them all to LED on my D2 and what an improvement.

Thought about doing the same for the RR and concur, its not worth it. I actually like the way the car is lit inside given all the differing positions where there are lights.

I bought the LEDS for the D2's of ebay, because as said, the prices in the Auto shops including ones that say they are super cheap are horrendous.

Good call.

I plan to do my L322.

I did my P38A - some pics here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/p38a-range-rover/161216-full-kit-interior-leds.html

I did my D3 (there's a similar thread in the d3/4 section and used globes similar to these. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251119527166

I need another set as the car has 13 globes.

I did puddle lights and footwell as well as cargo and reading lights, though i left the drivers reading light original as its less distracting while driving. No issues - they seem to be canbus compatible.

I just bought these for the cargo area as apparently they're brighter again but they haven't been delivered yet. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/301619658975

I figured at $6 total cost why not try it! The globes they sell at supercrap at 2 for $15 seem to be pretty much the same anyway.

Talking about puddle lights, I wish my L322's operated like the D4's where they operated with the parkers rather than the interior lights. I keep my interior lights off to not attract summer insects but really appreciated knowing where not to put my foot! I'd like to hack the wiring some day to change that although having spotted the huge bundle of wires behind the bonnet release lever cover when fitting an antenna cable, the puddle lights might not get touched.

I had earlier tried a couple of LED globes in the front interior lights but reverted to the originals due to too much light.

Dan, I tried those but you will need to dremel out some of the plastic housing for them to fit,

I did bright cold LED lights on cargo and second row and warm white LED in the front. Total $3 from Aliexpress and the result is excellent. Cold white is too stark for the front whereas warm white just looks like a brighter filament bulb. Cheers

Do you mean the first or second link? The first link fits no worries. The second link, i thought they fit no worriws but Im happy to make a bit of space for them in the boot light as that's the only place their going.

Edit: or do you mean in an L322? I only assume they would fit as they are similar in size to a standard w5w t10 globe.

Only the wedge style LED fit within the plastic shroud - unless you dremell the clear plastic lense cover then a rectangular style LED replacement might fit ;)

I bought a 5m strip of water proof LED strip lights from ebay for $5 and stuck it along the roof lining between the rear pillars in the boot (each end tucked behind the plastic at each pillar) and wired it to the boot interior light on the RH side. fantastic amount of light, cant forget to turn them off, to control u just push the latch in on the upper tailgate to think its closed, and push the button to turn back on, they also use the timer and will turn off after about 5 mins or so.

Note: Not the light on the pole...dont want to get your hopes up on the abilities of the LED strip lights.

Just got them today and they fit no worries. 9 LED 5630. Almost the same max dimension as the original globes. I will get a photo when i have a chance.

Heres a photo comparing the 6 SMD 5650 LED globes (thats a mouthful) vs the cheap LED globes i bought, which are already brighter than standard.

Much, much better.

Ta Dan. Where did you get these, and are they suitable for the front interior or best left for cargo area and puddle lights?

I'd like to upgrade the reverse lights too.

Thanks

they're the ones i linked to (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/301619658975) to in my previous post. I just thought I'd stick up a comparison photo against my cheaper LED globes, which were about 35c each.

They work in the interior lights (haven't tried the glove box and i can't easily get the covers of the reading lights for 3rd row passengers) though my feeling is they might be too bright for the main interior lights. Perfect in the boot and puddle lights though.

If anyone knows how to get the 3rd row reading lights out (they feel like they'll break) i reckon they'd be great there too for extra light when needed.

Cheers

Ta. I thought 5630 v 5650 was your comparison.

So how many 5630s should I buy?

Sorry rar110, the bright ones are 5630. The dimmer ones are 5050. My error.

To (hopefully) clarify it all and put it all in one post:

I bought these 5SMD 5050 LED globes for the interior lights, footwells and puddle lamps. They seem brighter than the standard globes, and are definitely whiter! Being multi-directional they're a good where there is a reflector in the fitting.

I then bought a set of these 9SMD 5630 LED globes for the boot area. They only have LEDs on one side, and the boot and puddle lamp fittings don't have reflectors. As the pack came with 2 globes i stuck the spare in the drivers door puddle light to compare it's brightness with the 5050's. It's much brighter!

Rar i would grab a pack of 10 5050 globes for the interior - they are good for the reflective fittings, and i feel the 5630s would be too bright. Then grab 5 5630 globes - 1 for the boot and 1 for each puddle lamp.

Hope that clears it up!! :)

Cheers

Dan
