I am in the process of returning to the road a 1983 Range Rover fitted with the Rover 4.4 V8/Formula Ferguson upgrade.
The engine is listed as using a Ryco Z86 (or equivalent oil filter) and I have been finding these difficult to obtain.
A couple of local dealers sell them but at a cost of $40 or more each.
So I would like to ask what the RR 4.4 V8 owners use or where they obtain their filters from, and hopefully at a more affordable price!
Thanks, Mark

You mean the P76 4.4, pretty sure they just use a Z9 filter.

Is that the Leyland P76 engine?

I hope so as there is plenty of room for one but I am unsure about the flow rates etc of the Z9 c/f the Z86?
The Z86 may be been to fit the P76 where space could be an issue?
I certainly like the price of a Z9 better!!!!

Yes. Was an ideal match for the vehicle but only happened in Australia as far as I know.

If the Z9 fits, so will the standard Land Rover part ERR3340.
The shorter Ryco equivalent to the Z9 is the Z89A - I used them interchangeably on my Hillman Hunter

The 4.4 P76 engine uses the Z86 filter if the original car timing cover is fitted. In a Range Rover this is highly unlikely to be still present as the water pump would be too low to run an engine fan. Therefore it is most likely to have a RR front cover and oil pump using a Z9 or Z89A filter. I used to rethread all the P76 oil filter mounts I came across to 3/4"UNF to fit Z9's and none of them had any trouble. I believe that pre 1975 Rover V8's used a similar filter to the P76 but they would be very rare now. Lastly, if there is indeed an early filter mount fitted, a later mount should just bolt on as they had the same gasket for many years.

I just go to our local Land Rover dealer who in Cairns is the Ford dealer and get the factory Discovery oil filter $17, 3 months ago when I got the last one. Sometimes they have special on and I've got one for as little as $9. I always check the dealer first before I go online. Sometimes they are cheaper. And the Disco filter fits my P76.
