View Full Version : Removed the wipe function from the washer switch(Puma).

This modification is for those who like me prefer to have a wet windscreen before the wipers either smear or allow the dirt to scratch the windscreen as the water is added.
This is on a MY12 but I expect all Puma's would be the same, not sure about earlier models but you could have look.
It was promted by a post elsewhere and the solution is simple.
Once done the washer switch will only squirt water, the driver then turns the wipers on or off as required.

Ready?
Here we go...
Remove the dashboard fuse box cover.
Locate and remove the wiper relay.

Remove the wiper relay plug from the holder by lifting the locking tab and pull the loom out gently.

Locate the Light Green with a Black trace wire.
2 choices now...
-I removed the red insert and with a jewlers screwdriver removed the terminal.
-alternatively cut the wire allowing enough to fitt a joiner or solder latter if required.

Insulate the wires or terminal and tape to the harness to stop any shorts.
Refit in reverse order and job complete in less than an hour.


It has been suggested you could carefully cut the pin from the relay.
I prefer one of the above methods as the work can be reversed fairly easily if required.

Good work. Im also planning to replace the washer nozzle with a wide angle fan spray and install a second one.
Im surprised to see that even the D4 still uses a needle jet rather than a fan spray.

Let me know how you go for access to the washer jets.
I looked at mine and I think it's a dash out job:eek:

You do need to get behind the dash to access them, but you can probably get away with just pulling the top of the dash forward. This is very simple. I did it by just removing the centre console and undoing the 15 screws that hold the dash in.

I have accessed them this way, but wasn't trying to remove them. If you did need more room, getting the dashboard fully out just means removing the gear levers, steering wheel and instrument console. Sounds a lot but is actually pretty easy - you know what Defenders are like.

After reading a thread about washer water strength, and replacing the standard water sprayer with a Peugeot 4?? across the blade sprayer system, I just thought I'd give them a clean.
I shoved the garden hose down in the water bottle under the bonnet and moved it around flushing out a few bits of plastic swarf and anything else in there. I then shoved pin down the jets on the water nozzle while the washers were turned on for a few good sessions.
The outcome os the water now shoots to the top of the windscreen screen no troubles, regularly. Actually well over the roof if not adjusted correctly. Sideways direction is still limited as the ball won't roll sideways enough to land the jet spray in the middle of the windscreen. But overall it's a good improvement from the piddle that hit the bottom of the screen just above there sprayer.

You can do this with the nanocom on a D2. Not sure if it's an option on the puma ecu though.

The only computer is for the motor on these Puma's.
They are still fairly old school electricly apart from the alarm system.
