I procrastinated about it till the last minute, and finally decided to shell out $3,500 last August with Allianz.
Within a month, the aircon compressor died - a $3,000 replacement, under warranty.
Today, the dealer repaired an oil leak from gaskets around the oil cooler pipe into the block, and a new control module for the memory seats/steering wheel - parts imported from England. Another $850 worth of parts and labour.

So, on balance, an okay decision. With another 15-odd months of warranty to go.

Anyone else had similar warranty experiences?

Yep, it's just insurance. It's one of the few products you ever buy while hoping you never have to use it. Kind of like condoms. No, hang on a minute...
