View Full Version : Some D4 questions, contemplating purchase

Hi Guys,
I'm considering a MY16 SDV6 SE7 and I just wanted to iron out a few quirks.
I have done searches and read plenty of posts but I have specific questions hopefully I can get some help with.
A) I didn't realise how crappy the overall diameter of the D4 wheel is, at 30" and the extremely poor tyre options for a 19" rim.
So in my research I have found the Compomotive 18" rims which they are claiming fit all D4's. Is anyone able to clarify this, I'm reading conflicting reports on wether they fit or not. Some saying the SDV6 D4 they won't fit???
Ideally if I was going to get the D4 I would want bigger sidewall protection, would anyone recommend or lay out the pros & cons of going to a 32" tyre.
Would I be better off getting a 20" rim with a 32"tyre (still better than 19" options) or if they fit the 18" Compomotive rims with either a 31.5'ish - 32" tyre.
I'm reading that guys are doing trips with the OEM 19" rims some with and some without problems.
If there were better tyre choices for the 19" I assume they would be OK. I mean better tyre choices with regards to different diameters.
I'm sure everyone has watched the prospeed YouTube vid http://youtu.be/S3X8S4iebTc
This has the extended rods and spacers stopping wheels turning full lock. Has anyone done this set up to fit 32" tyres?
Is the program to raise airbags a better option (can't remember name of program)
Trailer brakes should this be done by dealer or is there a compatible aftermarket setup that works with the trailer sway assist?
Snorkel, Airtec or Safari?
Reading posts on ARB Bars, I'll keep following that one. Cheers.
Roof rack options? Is the dealer rack steel or alloy. What else is available?
Is there a long range tank available for SDV6 D4?
That will about do it for now, I have a hell of a lot more questions but I'll wait to cross these hurdles first and actually secure a vehicle, I have been shopping over at the dark side LC 200 and desperately want to be convinced to stay with LR.
I look forward to your replies. Cheers.

Compomotive 18s fit all.
Think I've seen 285/65/18s on a D3 on here.
LLAMS height controller is useful.
No Airtec snorkel.
Myriad roof rack options.
Couple of different long range tanks available.
Good luck!

Yes LAMS that's the one I was thinking of. So what would be the benefits of installing this?

You either need rods or LLAMS, not both. Wheel spacers are illegal in certain states (definitely in QLD and NSW), so you can't use them.
A 31.5" tyre is about the biggest you'd really want to go. Any bigger will have major rubbing issues or need some serious mods. Just remember that that the "crappy" 30" tyres on the D4 may be smaller that the Defender, but it doesn't have any diff clearance issues like the Defender.
Anything over a 31" tyre will need a rear wheel carrier, which is ok if you are considering a long range tank anyway, as the spare won't fit in the wheel well underneath.

Hi Babs
i have the suspension rods, choosing between these or LLAMS is simply a question of budget. At $100 the rods are manual, but i can flick all 4 to the new heights in under 30 seconds, and back again when i'm done off road in the same amount of time. The LLAMS set up you don't need to get out of the car which is the convenience you pay for.
I have 265/60/18 mud terrain tyres on my D4 - I like sand driving and rocky bush trails and i think this is plenty of side wall for both with absolutely no rubbing at any heights. The car in the prospeed video has rubbing issues as those tyres are too big hence the rods and spacers - i love the look of that car but the tyres are overkill.
here are my tyres (may have to click to enlarge as i do not know how to imbed)

Luke's D4 is a 2011 2.7. You can fit the standard LR 18" wheels with a problem.

I don't see it as a question of budget, as more of a question on how do you use the suspension.
If you need to frequently change ride height, then Llams is the way to go. I have Llams, so I am not able to do a comparison to how easy rods are to use, although I have had to use my Llams in a situation where I would not have been able to access rods when I needed the extra height (couldn't open the doors it was that tight), and I would not have pre-set the height via rods as I did not expect to be in that situation.

Babs, you are probably onto it,the early D4 2.7 18" wheels do not fit the front of the SDV6 D4.They do fit the rears if you want to run the 2.7 18" rims as spares,in the event of a front puncture it would mean a double wheel change.

Is this a "given" about anything over 31" tyre not fitting underneath?
Two good options would be the 275/65-18 = 32.07" or a 265/65-18 = 31.5"
A long range tank will be the last thing if ever, I would like to keep spare under vehicle for now, is there anyone who has squeezed a 31.5" or 32" spare underneath?

I think the 31.5 fits IF fairly well deflated, see what the brains trust says.
Gordon has a spreadsheet on his GOE Experience website with tyres that fit and mods needed if you havent seen it.

Babs, actually, I've just been looking at the GOE website, it can be done on a D4, if you remove some of the heat shields and stow the tyre deflated. So it's a possible not a definitely not!
For my D3, I still couldn't get my 285/60-18 spare to stow, even deflated and with the shields removed. :(

Yes 265/65R18 fits underneath deflated, a few have done it.

I had both on the D3, initially rods and then LLAMS. For the short time I had LLAMS I found it more convenient and more configurable. It was really nice to run on highway at -20 height, much better driving, flatter trajectory. Off-road, gave me many more choices. I will be getting the system for the D4.

Andy, unfortunately they don't. I went and bought a second hand 18 inch Disco rim for my second spare to put on the rear only and they won't clear the rear brakes either. Very sad and I had already put my damaged K02 on it for our recent trip. Luckily I tried it out before we left.
EDIT I just had another look and the rear callipers barely clear the inside of the GOE rims. There is less clearance than for the larger front disks and the rear wheels are much more scored on the inside than the fronts due to the stones etc catching on the callipers.

This bloody tyre size dilemma is driving me crazy, long term I can see it is necessary to go Compomotive 18" Rims.
I would love to go 265/65-18 or 285/60-18 both 31.5" diameter.
Plan B is 265/60-18 which is a 30.5" diameter
Do I still have to relocate air con lines with the 31.5 tyre"?
I am assuming if I go the 30.5" tyre which is only half inch over OEM that there would be zero issues?
Is the 31.5 too big for a daily driver (fitted with AT Tyres)?
Should I just keep it conservative with the 30.5"?
I feel like I'm falling into the aftermarket trap and I haven't even got one yet. See this is where the Toyo LC simplifies things for off road.
I think maybe I'm looking into all this too much and torturing myself with frivolous decisions.
Spare could be solved by going rear wheel carrier as suggested. Now have to decide on RidgiDidge or Frontrunner, any suggestions on the two. I noticed a lot of carriers the tyres cover the rear tail lights, this I definitely don't want. I would prefer it centred more to have clear view Iv tail lights.

Hi Babs,
I run a 265/65r18 in the BFG KO2s as a daily driver. Great Size/Tyre. Zero rubbing anywhere (2012 D4) even in extreme offroad situations. Its nice being a little higher offroad too, although a little more would be nice :)
I decided against keeping the tyre underneath as it is too exposed to damage for my liking, instead using the RidgiDidge carrier. Great piece of kit, it does make it a little more difficult to access the rear (an extra step is all).
Cheers,
Scott

I have 265/65r18 ko2 and didn't need to relocate the rear air lines, there's just a hint of rubbing on the plastic wheel well liner, but nothing major, and I think that's due to fitting GOE rockslides so now a few screws are missing to keep the liner in place
The 285/60 are a tiny bit smaller so should be better

You will have to forget about inches and use proper tyre sizes so we know what you are talking about!
I use the 285/60R18 BFG K02's as my daily drive and they are great. Very slight rubbing which doesn't matter and they improve the cars ride as well.

Cool thanks for replies guys.
265/65-18 & 285/60-18 can you get spare under?
Or do you have to remove heat shields etc?
285/60-18 are technically a few mm smaller diameter but they are wider, does this cause any rubbing being wider.

Don't go any wider than 265 if you have any ambitions of fitting conventional snow chains on the front.

Definitely. With 285s there's not even a finger's width of space between the tyre sidewall and upper control arm.
Snow chains aren't something I have to worry about up here. :D

I have 265 and removed the heat shields and deflated to around 5-8psi to fit the spare, you also have to use a jack or your foot to keep the tyre level when winching it up into the space, or it jams. I believe others have fitted the 265 with the heat shield, so the 285 should fit as it's smaller

You're over thinking it...
I've yet to find anywhere the 265-60-18 won't go... The head **** of changing to 31.5 or larger gains an almost in-perceptible benefit and a lot of compromises.
As for the LC200, several in the clubs - all have had: Suspension upgrades, tyre upgrades, electrical upgrades, bull bars crack from vibrations etc. They are not an out of the box vehicle by a long shot.
On the point of removing heat shields to fit a tyre - I certainly wouldn't do it, or trust that tyre after a hot summer under there with 2 "hot spots" next to the tread... But to each their own.

Zero issues with 265/60/R18. I took this conservative option at least until warranty is finished and I'm happy so far with the D697s.
And there are other good choices in this size, including BFG KO2, Maxxis 980 and even the mud tyre Luke is running.
In fact I will almost certainly be staying with this size long term.
You haven't really said much on your intended use (unless I missed that somewhere)?
eg mostly city driving with some outback touring, lots of offroad rock crawling, beach/island holidays ???
Most of these applications will be just fine with the 265/60 or indeed a better 19" tyre and the stock wheels.
I feel like I'm falling into the aftermarket trap and I haven't even got one yet.
I think maybe I'm looking into all this too much and torturing myself with frivolous decisions.
Yes I think you are torturing yourself unnecessarily but it's not frivolous.
I think it's important to think through and get right for what you want to do but perhaps you're overthinking.
But keep in mind that there are some reasonable ATs and now one LT (Maxxis) in the 255/55/R19 that would allow you to not rush into the 18" wheels etc.
No it's not the best wheel size and no the tyre selection is not great but it's much better than it used to be and I don't believe cause for panic anymore.
Have you read through the recent threads on 19" tyres? There is real-world experience to review, both good and bad. eg

Babs, the other thing to get in your thinking is that the D4 is nothing like traditional four wheel drives that you are used to. Tyre size is not as important because the diff clearance is not governed by the tyre size. You can increase or decrease diff clearance at the push of a button. Everything needs to be taken slowly or you start bashing the front cross member on the ground because of the independent suspension. The car just walks through obstacles with the traction control and smarts doing the work. You end up relearning what you thought you knew.
The car is incredibly capable straight out of the box, including with 19 inch tyres. Don't listen to the motoring journos that don't understand much about the car. Adding bigger and more aggressive tyres is only a slight improvement and gives you more peace of mind when on tough surfaces. Really the only really important requirements for me would be Llams (or rods) and a long range fuel tank with a spare wheel carrier, not a Kaymar rear bar, if I was buying new. They overcome the two major weaknesses of the car in my opinion.

Thanks Boys, I really appreciate the sound advice.
A couple of things have now advanced for me, my Deefer sold today so I have made my decision I'm going to go with the D4, I'll be heading out to a dealer in the morning with intent to leave a deposit, the pricing homework has been done.
I'm going to play the conservative card and grab the Compomotive 18" rims and fit 265/60-18 tyres. Still deciding between BFG KO2 or D697?
It will be greater piece of mind going back an inch in rim size, with those tyres I'll gain 1.5" extra sidewall.
Didn't really want to put a rear wheel carrier they're a pain in the arse but I really want (probably not need) a long range tank. I could make do with out but I'm lazy I like the idea of less trips a month to servos.
So what are your thoughts on carriers?
I won't go bumper replacement, I like the look of the Frontrunner or RidgiDidge carriers, I want the tyre more centred so tail lights aren't obstructed. Any advice here would be appreciated.
Could I also get some recommendations on roof racks. I like the Prospeed rack, looks good but it doesn't look practical.
Is this the factory OME? If so how much does it way? LR website tell you nothing.
Roof rating is 75 kilos including rack, that's a poor effort. This guy is way over with all the gericans. Is that the OME Rack in photo?

Looking at that vehicle, if I recall correctly, this was set up by LR themselves. Could it be that here in Aus (only) we are limited to the 75Kg ?
With all the talk on tyres here, I'm not so sure I'll be swapping my rims over as soon as I thought I would,,, we'll see though. Love the look of the Compomotive wheels.

I do a lot of klm, I love my Defenders but they wear you down.
When I came back to defer the plan was to keep and pass down to kids, I didn't expect them to increase in value, nevertheless it put me closer to the D4 or LC range which suit my lifestyle better.
It will be nice to have a vehicle drive me rather than me drive it.
I will get another Deefer down the track I'll look for a td5, something with good body but mechanical problems that I can strip down restore and continue my LS3 conversion dream. Plenty of time for that.

That's including rack.
Maximum roof load is 71.8kg (less the weight of the roof rails & cross bars) for "Factory Roof Rails & Cross Bars".
For the Expedition Rack it lowers again to 54.3kg (less the weight of the rack & rails).
IIRC it's in the manual but also Sniegy's post here:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...f-loading.html (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/145885-discovery-4-roof-loading.html)
These are dynamic figures. Sniegy's comment from the same thread:
"While the vehicle is stationary it can increase, but i do not have a load reference for it"

For the Expedition Rack it lowers again to 54.3kg (less the weight of the rack & rails). IIRC it's in the manual but also Sniegy's post here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...f-loading.html (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/145885-discovery-4-roof-loading.html) These are dynamic figures. Sniegy's comment from the same thread: "While the vehicle is stationary it can increase, but i do not have a load reference for it" Cheers, Scott
Looks like the slimline Frontrunner rack is the go then, full alloy, not sure but it would have to be between 10-15kgs

From memory it's more than that .... 30kg comes to mind.
Note also that you can get short length ones that obviously weigh less.
Less area for carrying stuff but then again you can't put too much up there before overloaded.
I got a short Rhino Pioneer Platform partly for this reason and partly for its low profile.
Here's a couple of good threads that cover a lot of the options:

Scott thanks for those links, I will be going the Frontrunner rack and rear wheel carrier.
Can anyone clarify if a SDV6 D4 SE 7 has rear air conditioning, it's showing on LR website spec that rear climate is an option, is there still vents in second and third row? And does that mean that the vehicle wouldn't have the aircon lines under the rear wheel arch. Because if it doesn't have the lines under rear wheel arch I'm going to go with the 265/65-18 (31.5") as it seems minimal modifications to have them fit in. I will be fitting Llams regardless.
Tombie I don't think I will ever require snow chains, if I did it would have to be rear only I suppose.
If someone could clarify the air con lines under rear guard it would be appreciated. Cheers.

Rear air would be an option in SE,standard in HSE I believe.
If you have rear air the lines definately go in the rear gaurd.
In the non rear air D4 like mine the second row get aircon air from the centre console vents, there are plastic ducts under the front seats in mine,I suspect these may supply air up the sides of the rear windows, for the 3rd row,but Ive never looked.

I notice you have to cut a portion of the ditch/channel rubber and not utilise the majority of it. I have never seen underneath that channel, would it be prone to accumulating debris and dirt etc?

I was having a closer look Tombie, it's a lot of money for only few cross bars, you then have to buy the abs plastic floor panels. There is not a lot of tie down options, you can put tie down bolts in place of the screw down bolts, though it just doesn't seem that versatile.
Definitely the best looking option though. :)

The Fuji shows up red goldfields mud really well. ;)
Got mine and my young bloke's Amarok nicely mud covered on Saturday on a firewood gathering trip east of Kalgoorlie. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like washing it when we got back (it was dark by the time we'd unloaded his ute and my trailer) and I parked it in the shed. By the time I got to it on Sunday afternoon, it had set like concrete. Good thing I've got a high pressure gerni-gun. :p
Timed the trip well though. Would have run out of wood today had we not gone out - and it has rained here all day today. I doubt we'd be able to get into the same areas today or tomorrow. Proved one thing though ........... Discovery (even pulling trailer) is better through mud than VW Amarok. :D

Some more questions regarding fitting bigger tyres 265/65-18 or the 285/60-18
In another thread it was commented a loss of power albeit that was a 2.7. (Thanks Andy)
How noticeable would it be with the SDV6?
I am planning on a DPL re-flash.
The other concern I have is will this put any extra load on drivetrain, Electronics abs tc etc, diffs, CV's, gearbox etc?
I would think not only 1.5 inches increase but just want to be sure, I'd love some feedback.
At the end of the day I want to go the bigger tyre (265/65 285/60 R18's) purely for the old school mentality more sidewall is better but I assume if I went with a 265/60-18 there would be sufficient sidewall protection. I don't want to sacrifice reliability for that extra sidewall.
Every 4wd I have owned over the past 25 years has gone up an average of minimum 2" in tyre size, in saying that the only compromise was a slight power loss, LC's Patrols, Hilux's etc they were strong enough in the drivetrains and minimal electronics.
What concerns me is the D4 is obviously fine tuned to perform in the stock version, with electronics tuned to suspension, wheels & braking etc.... What really is the compromise I would be making with the bigger profile tyres.
Or am I worrying too much and the D4 is more than capable to handle a bigger tyre?
I feel like an infant starting all over again, with the D4, it goes against everything I have been accustomed to. Airbags over coils and leaf, independent F&R over live axels, lockers over electronics, TC, DSC, EPB, CCV, APB BLA BLA BLA.
It all makes for great conversation and the dumb questions I ask I'm sure there will be others who come along that will benefit from the replies. :D :P

Don't forget shift points move. Torque band shifts... The tune won't sort that...
You're chasing the old world of "clearance" thinking like the old school vehicles.
I have always run larger tyres. Always...
With the D4 I didn't change where I drive, and barely changed sizes... And I have absolutely no problems at all.. And no compromise.

Good point on the talk band :)
Talk band will change, what disadvantage will this pose?
I'm not necessarily looking for more underbody clearance, it's the tyre/rim combination sidewall concern. I don't slow down for cattle grids and rough roads with big holes.
I'm worried with less sidewall I'm more prone to rim damage, then the concern of rocky stuff. I've seen the vids and seen them do it on 19" & 20" rims but they look so vulnerable. And I've seen plenty of sidewall punctures. I've seen and heard some success stories, I just don't want to be one of the fail stories :(
I don't won't big sacrifices for the sake of the 265/65 285/60 R18 so I'm trying to build a good case on Pro's & Con's.
I'm going long range tank so I don't have to worry about the spare fitting and spare wheel carrier is already ordered.
So I just want to make sure I'm making the right tyre choice as it's the most expensive single item purchase (rim tyre package) out of all the accessories :) :) :)

Hi Babs,
Lots of opinions flying, I'll add mine on tyre size...
I went from a Defender 110 with standard tyres to a D4 with Standard Tyres and in some situations it struggled:
1 - Mud, I needed at least proper all terrain tyres to get through even light mud on inclines. OK, not a size related issue.
2 - Tracks where other solid axle 4wds had dug out wheel ruts (hope that makes sense). Most of the time the rise was large enough to collect normally the exhaust or the front/rear suspension arms. Yes I had/have LLAMS.
3 - Rim scratches - endless rim scratches right on the lip of the rims.
4 - I was too scared to lower pressures on the low profile tyres in sand/mud/generally off road.
Moving to the 265/65r18 ATs (I went BFG KO2's) made a world of difference to the above (came from 255/55r19). They are not a mud tyre, I still touch on the rutted tracks, I still get rim scratches but nothing as bad as I did before and I have no issues lowering pressures (I realise that the difference in sidewall between the 265/60r18 and 265/65r18 is minimal, but everything adds up).
Power wise (I've got the SDV6) I've noticed very little difference in performance and fuel usage, there was a difference though and it was for the worse on both.
I spent about 9 months touring (and daily driving) before the new tyres and 9 months after, that includes long trips and boys weekends and there is no way I am going back to standard size tyres.
I should say in general, that the car in standard guise was still AMAZINGLY capable off road. The grip it could extract from tracks is phenomenal, I just needed a bit more.
Also, they look awesome :)

I've noticed no change in the acceleration or drive ability of the car, other than its way more comfortable on and off-road with the 265/65r18s, and it's definitely more capable off-road, fuel consumption is wore though, the ko2 are a very heavy tyre with deep tread. I went to Fraser Island on 19" tyres and then a few months later with 18" and the difference was huge, so much easier to drive, more comfortable, just better all round.

How noticeable would it be with the SDV6?
I am planning on a DPL re-flash.
Something to think about with the re-map, it requires the ECU to be physically opened on the bench and therefore the change will be known.
This may cause you issues in a warranty situation. Only the older models have had the encryption successfully bypassed for software-only re-map.
To my knowledge this has not yet been achieved for the 3.0L models (Tombie will know this for sure).
I would not consider this until after warranty period and even then I really don't think I'd bother for an SDV6.
I'm not wanting to start an argument about warranty and consumer rights etc .... just point out something to consider.
I would not want the stress of the battle even if I'm in the right.
It would be difficult to argue that an unapproved engine software change has had no impact on the engine/drivetrain related failure or fault (if something happens).
Cheers,
Scott

Mine doesn't have rear air and it rubs very slightly on that seam. There is a small hole worn through the plastic lining after several years of full articulation driving off road or I wouldn't have noticed it.
I haven't noticed any reduction in performance due to the larger tyres. However, I do notice a better ride and since swapping from D697's to K02's the handling is a tiny bit better, probably due to the stiffer side wall. Last year I put the 19's back on to get the last bit of wear out of the old tyres on road. That only lasted a day and I put the 18's back on because it was not as good to drive.
With my 285's the speedo is dead accurate but the odometer is out by the difference between the tyre circumferences. It was 100% accurate with the 255/55R19 tyres.

Bob, thank you. Another reassuring bit of information. :)
I don't think tyre centre is going to want the 19" rims and tyres, so there will be no rebate, Great (not) :(
So looks like it will be costly.
Do these rims and tyres sell on here? Maybe guys running stock sizes want spares or just another set?
Otherwise I'll just have to store them and put them back on if it ever has a warranty issue that could be linked to the bigger tyres. :$

Cheers,
Scott
I think the SDV6 is just as quick as a D3 V8 (Uses the half the fuel though)and I can drag off V6 Dunnydores. I think coming from a Defender you will be pleasantly surprised. (V8 sounds better though)

Bob, thank you. Another reassuring bit of information. :)
I don't think tyre centre is going to want the 19" rims and tyres, so there will be no rebate, Great (not) :(
So looks like it will be costly.

The GBP might be coming down now that UK have left the EU.
This could be good for us buying products out of UK.
They have nothing to fall back on, no mining no Industry no nothing, oh I forgot they have Sharia law so theoretically they will no longer have to pay tax, oh hang on I'm getting mixed up, that doesn't apply to Anglo's only the minority.
Ah well nonetheless, GBP comes down for dollar to dollar and then we go shopping. Prospeed gear, wheels, you name it here we come.

As others on here, I fitted the 18inch compomotive rims sourced through Green Oval see pictures attached with 265/65/18 AT tyres.
I only noticed slight rubbing when cornering tight & very hard and the suspension is pushed down one side, then only momentarily for a second. Otherwise everything is great.
I fitted adjustable rods for use on very uneven terrain but they don't get used massively and car is adequate in most cases in the std off-road height.
Finally finished the car off with bullbar, winch and roof-rack.

Ok. I am ordering the GOE rims just given Gordon the go ahead, now I have make a serious decision on tyres.
It's still between BFG KO2 & D697.
In the BFG there's two size choices 285/60-18 & 265/65-18 one of them has a higher load rating the other has a higher speed rating? So which is better?
I would think the higher load rating as the vehicle will be loaded constantly with tools, fridge etc.
But then I'm no expert, I was hoping someone could establish the difference between what is better to go for. Cheers.

I am biased but go for the widest! My 285's have always been really good in sand, whether my previous D697's or the current K02's.
Because of the tread pattern the K02's are probably slightly narrower in the treads than the D697. They have quite a step in on every second tread block so the average width is less I reckon.
My personal observation is that the K02's seem tougher and appear to have thicker side walls and much better side biters than the D697's. They both chip on sharp rocks (rear tyres only) but the rubber between the treads gets cut on the D697's and not on the K02's, comparing them from my last two trips on the Birdsville track and other rocky roads.

If they are secured the same way as the D3 they help hold the flares in place. My experience with plastic bits clipped on is not good. The mud laps are screwed on through the flares and make it more robust.

The knock offs don't work for me. Not sure about genuine ones as I have not used them. If the shape is the same for both then neither will work. Maybe we are not supposed to leave the blacktop?
Plane Fixer
3rd August 2016, 05:03 AM
Babs, before you venture off the blacktop the front of the rear flares at the back doors take a hiding from the small grit thrown up from the front wheels.
Get a clear protective coating over them as very soon they will chip and look daggy.
This is why a good size front mudflap is also recommended, the LR ones do not do the job as I found out.

I've done this and mods are required to the flaps, especially the rear. For the vehicle, I found that extra screws improved the attachment of the flaps. This meant extra holes in the plastic wheel arch.
These flaps are a big improvement over the OEM ones.

I considered cutting the back flaps to fit around the exhaust but ended up making a curved 40X3 mm aluminium bracket mounted horizontally to hold the flap away from the exhaust. Figured that it may hang funny if the thicker rim around the edge was cut. Only 1 of the original fixings lined up with the new flap but there is space behind to get your hands in to fasten nuts & bolts. My D4 is 4 months old now so it is a bit easier to drill holes in it.;)

I take it you haven't tried the jack yet Babs. Mine came with a Kaymar wheel carrier so I haven't had the pleasure of dealing with the wheel carrier. I have a 100L tank in it's place. The standard jack is the biggest POS I have ever used especially with a 3 tonne car. I now have my highlift permanent mounted on the Kaymar carrier and I use it off the Kaymar or the ARB Bullbar. I always carry a vehicle stand to put under once jacked. I have never had a flat, just had reason to take the wheels off a lot for maintenance issues, brakes, handbrake and bushes.

I don't think the main issue is access to the winder, that is just a matter or installing an extension or raising a seat (I have a mat and cargo barrier too so I know your pain). IMO the main issue is the flimsiness of the winch mechanism which is VERY prone to jamming if wound with no tension on the cable. I have accessed the spare tyre twice in the 2 years I have owned my D4 and even then last time I had great difficultly with the winch jamming. I only just got it free. When I get time I will investigate an option like this...
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-4/142057-my-d3-has-lost-its-virginity-spare-wheel-winch.html
I would like to find a mechanical option that avoids coming through the floor altogether. I haven't had a good look underneath to check feasibility yet.

From looking at it here
Winder-O-Matic Discovery 3/4 (http://hr-parts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=59)
I assume it simply sits on the existing 'nut' providing easier access to the place of activation.
For me a socket, extension bar and ratchet were a cheaper alternative than this.

Cheers,
Chris
Hi Chris,
I've thought about that approach a few times, usually while standing at the side of the road with a shredded tyre, unpacking all my camping gear, in the rain. :-(
If LR had put access to the winder through the chassis rail or somewhere under the removable bumper cover it would have been great. But I'm not sure how that would easily be achieved, as the spare restricts side access almost completely.
Cheers.

If LR had put the winder like that everyone who has ever had to change a tyre on a Hilux or similar would be complaining...
Hint when raising the tyre..
Fit the bracket to the tyre and then drag the tyre back from the vehicle until it's taught.
Then commence winching - it's always under load and will not cause any problems.
Easy....

Easy to fit, no drilling, just
small slits cut in carpet, works a treat. Complete access to winch with 3rd row seats down!

In 6 years of D4 ownership, I've used the tyre winch in anger heaps of times with and without a wheel. You just keep a bit of tension on it and you'll never have an issue.
The wheel idea works well in both directions.
A tyre place I went to years ago with D4 number one, managed to jam it .... even though I'd briefed them on how to use it. But they pulled it apart and got it working again with no issue.

Andy I thought they modified a socket to suit the ring/hole. Put a cut in a large socket and slip it over, drill hole through sides of socket and slip a bolt through to lock it on the ring/hole, replacing the hook they gave us.

That's my one and there are other ways to achieve similar. For example, Andrew is planning to weld a socket on instead of bolting something to the eye. Or even just use a 1" 6-sided socket, which works ok but is a bit loose.
But either way, I think this will mean the interface to that winder-matic gizmo is a problem. It will get too high I suspect. Plus I think it's designed for the older style winder with a nut rather than eye.

No, it's the difference between just AM/FM broadcast and DAB broadcasts.
I can't remember the name of the system the sends the radio station name, plus the "now playing" information, but that isn't digital radio.
You'd have something that looks like this on your central display:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=112533&stc=1&d=1470956235
But given that you don't have the aerial, as Martin pointed out (the two options there, according to the parts listings, are either the DAB aerial, or a CB aerial, or the blanking plate ), it's unlikely you will. It is an extra cost option.

Thats what the dealer told me also so it was put on the side of the steering column. Not ideal but I can see it just and after an initial fiddle adjusting when towing I leave it alone and can feel it working fine. Interesting that DI5CO fitted where i wanted it, I wonder did he do it himself.

Why oh why did I not do this sooner, you definitely get what you pay for and this was the most enjoyable and comfortable trip to the farm I have done to date. :) except for the ticket from the Dirty Highway Pootrol. :(
Life has never been easier loading and unloading, frequenting the tailgate copious times for fridge visits. The access mode and now with the even lower setting thanks to the Llams was a breath of fresh air. The vehicle was at the perfect access height, I kept thinking thank God I didn't go the LC200, I would have done a 2" lift on a LC and that would have meant climbing up and in for a coldie.

Babs, I've done 230,000km, a lot on very rough roads. I've never had a stone hit my headlights. The windscreen, yes, the fog lights in my ECB Bull Bar, lots of times, including when driving my new D4 home from Sydney across the Nullarbor (they are both currently smashed) but nothing whatsoever on the headlights. I think the headlights are plastic anyway.

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate, so pretty resistant to cracking etc.
You can get headlight "protectors" - but they are a very different beast to what most people think of as headlight protectors (which are normally a clear plastic / polycarbonate clip-on lens cover). The Land Rover ones for D3/D4 area black plastic "frame" which sits around the headlight with "webbing" that runs across the face of the light in certain areas.

I've seen a few Disco's with these fitted. Personally I think they are more about appearance, as I really don't think that they would offer too much protection at all. You can get similar for the tail lights. ;)

I know what you mean about windscreen and ECB fog lights! Both my fog lights are wrecked, and at $80 each for ECB replacements, I think I might try the SCA $30 (for the pair) ones that look like they will fit
I have heard of 1 person having a cracked headlight lens, but being polycarbonate, they are very resistant to stones.

No problems at all with the LED's in my ECB. I had to replace the fixings however. I just put in stainless bolts as the original screws pulled out of the plastic. Going to get a quote to have the roof, wheel flares and door sills (for under rock slider) wrapped with a clear protective stone guard wrap.
I want the roof done before the roof rack goes on because it will be impossible to clean under there once fitted.
The flares done to eliminate stone chips as others have recommended on here.
And the door sills done before the rock sliders are fitted incase any crud ever makes its way through the gaps between body and slider.

Hexis Skintac HX20000
The wrap place stock and use both 3M and Avery products as well but recommended this one as the best for a clear protective film.
Apparently it lasts longer and is able to self-heal to some extent. I was told that most scratches in the film can be removed with the application of hot water but haven't tried that.
I have easily removed a couple of scratches with polish and on our recent outback trip the flares suffered no damage at all.
However, I have also fitted sliders with protection plates and better mud guards since the previous major trip, so the flares see a lot less stone chips in the first place.
Anyway, it is virtually invisible once applied unless you look very closely.
This was done by Exclusive Wraps which is probably not much help to you as they are in Brisbane.

Had a big scare yesterday, went through a brushless auto car wash, purchased the basics $10 wash I wasn't interested in any of their spray on polish crap, just wanted a simple wash as the Discovery wasn't soiled just a bit dusty. Didn't want their blow dry, driving does the same thing.
Went through all good, got to my destination parked it for a few hours and when I got back to get in it looked like the vehicle had been covered in tree sap, completely covered, it was what ever they used in the wash had crystallised.
Long story short went back complained, they put me through again, seemed to reactivate the crystals and came off. Drove straight back home and washed it properly myself before their crap dried and did the same thing again.
Just a heads up for everyone, I thought this being a brushless wash would be the safest option, never would have thought I would have to worry about the products they use in the wash.

Thanks for bringing this back up Wen, reminds me to do an update on the flaps.
So far found them good, they were easy to fit, and although they haven't stopped all mud spraying up the sides and back they have stopped at least 90% and now I don't get cow dunn on my door handles when at the farm (that was always interesting when getting back in the vehicle) :o

They're almost perfect straight out of the box. No need to upset the cook more than is necessary.

There I was expecting you to get a Cruiser. The blokes in that club you're in won't be very impressed ;)

Actually LROCWA has now got more LRs and a good few D4s amongst the membership.
I was very pleased to hear recently that some of the more anti LR members have now gone elsewhere... and good riddance to them. :D
All I have to do now is sort the good from the just bloody expensive for a tow hitch, dual batteries, bull bar...... good job the Cook doesn't do interent banking and see what all this stuff is going to cost. :o
I'd never buy a 200 series Kelvo, not after the probs our son had with his burning oil and a transmission which had to build pressure before you could actually drive off!
AlanH.
PS. No scratchy track trips for a few weeks....

Aesthetically I think the Rhino low profile looks better, I'll just have to wait for this Frontrunner to grow on me.

I quite like the Rhino Backbone system,,, but not allowed to have anything on the roof
We'll see if that changes in the future ;)

Assuming this is for aesthetic reasons perhaps do what I do and remove the Rhino platform for normal city driving and only use it for trips.

Must admit yours is the first one I've seen with the full length Front Runner rack on their new mounting system. Personally, I prefer their old mounting system. It might be slightly higher (that suits me, as it leaves me enough room for their s/s camping table under the rack), but the legs and general support system is far less "bulky" on the old system - especially the front legs. ;)
You have the same ladder as I've got - works well with the Front Runner rack and, at least in my opinion, looks much better than the other style I've seen which has a lower step to the right of the number plate.

One thing that I can say about the Front Runner racks is that they are bloody strong. I have had some very heavy loads on mine, including using the rack and the air suspension to lower a heavy roller door from its mount at my son's place to replace the motor / gearbox on it, and then raise the entire assembly back up onto its mounts.
I've also hit the underside of the office building I was working at in Perth a while back - hard. (I was distracted and raised rather than lowered the suspension as I was coming around the corner :censored:). Knocked a large chunk of concrete out of the building, and there is still a scrape mark on top of the rack as evidence of where I hit - but other than cosmetic, no damage done to the rack or the car. ;)

Wish i had a decent enough carport to do that Scott. Mines made out of steel box tube, wouldn't trust hanging anything on it.
A lot of personal preferences on the looks department between roof racks, I have the full length new Front Runner but don't mind the Rhino either. Definitely love the new mounting rails. Solid as hell.

I was told we can still fit the S/S table under our new ones Babs. I just can't justify the cost of it...

Looking at the photos of Babs' rack, I'd say you would be able to fit the table under there. The rack is not as low as I had been lead to believe - not really a lot of difference in height from the old mounting system by the look of those pics. It was Steve at Lifestyle 4WD who told me that the table wouldn't fit under the new rack (he supplied and fitted the rack on my D4.
The asking price for the genuine Frontrunner table and mounting slides is a bit steep. I got a very good deal on mine through the local ARB store up here - they have the same table under the roofrack on their County. It wouldn't be difficult to make up your own slides and table though - nothing to it. ;)
