View Full Version : Snow Chain pain.

I'm looking at getting snow chains for the Disco.
The Owner's Handbook specifies these tyres 215/75 R16 Pirelli Scorpion S/T 107T on the front wheels to fit the chains. DO these tyres go on the existing rims or do I need new rims?

But what about the rear tyres? Do I stay with the 235/70 R16? or get a set of the Pirellis for the rear as well?

and what does S/T mean? Or is that a Pirelli identifier?

And finally what chain tyre combination do you use?

Thanks

Julian.

Why change tyres , get chains to fit the tyres you have.

I'm not running different size tyres, The Land Rover Owner's Hand book specifies the Pirelli Scorpion yada yada on page 196

I'm not sure that chains that fit the tyres will not damage the ABS cables on the front. Hence the "Skinny" Pirelli's

I'm going to have a good look at the front and see what the clearance issues are.

No issues, get them for the tyres you have.

I run a set on 265/75's, I'm at the snow so often they live in the car, not that they ever really get used, but I have used them ;)

You will find the 215/75's are actually the winter tyre size sold in cold climates as a second set.

So if you can run chains on a wider and taller tyre than mine, on a Disco 2 :D
Yay

What make chains do you have?
Thanks for the great news.

My chains are "V2 traction" brand.

Went with them as that's what my connections could get me at a good price! Haha!

As an aside, we used to run chains on 235/70's as well, and 255/65's, which are the two stock sizes for 16" D2 wheels.

I've seen these V2 Traction

Snow Wheel Chains Brand NEW V2 Traction Diamond Pattern Size 104 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Snow-Wheel-Chains-Brand-New-V2-Traction-Diamond-Pattern-Size-104-/282012294347?hash=item41a93e1ccb:g:UCAAAOSwSgJXORZ q)

As they are kind of local, I'll head in and get 2 pairs.

Thanks for the advice on this, as you may have guessed I had no idea on snow chains.

Thanks

Julian.

Aren't you only meant to run chains on the front wheels on the D2?

Sure I read that in the owners manual ... ??

I don't recall reading anything about that. I'll have a look tonight. I'd guess that chains on drive wheels would be SOP.

Cheers

That's what the owners manual says. That's for if you want to only run one set, then they go on the front.

I only run them on the front, it would have to be pretty bad to need them on all 4.

Also run with CDL locked.

Always on low traction (slippy) surfaces lock the CD. If you wait until you need it, it may be too late.
As for snow chains on all four wheels. I might need them :D one day.

And the car will look better with 2 pairs.

Cheers
Julian.

Get chains that fit the tyres. Learn how to fit them correctly and practice fitting them somewhere it isn't bl00dy cold. Practice fitting them with gloves on, 'cos trust me, you'll want gloves on when you have to fit them. In Vic., the ARC will require you to carry them, but probably won't make you fit them. And. I agree with MR LR, things would need to be extreme to need all four wheels fitted. I'd go so far as to say that the road would be closed if it was that bad. The ARC always jump early on that stuff.
CDL MUST be locked. Mine is set to turn off the TC and ABS. However, having driven to Buller and Hotham and Falls and Buffalo in coaches for years, it's fair to say that I won't be seeing you up there. Seen enough snow for one lifetime. Hate the stuff.

Will, with 265s and chains on the front do you have much clearance?

Seems strange the manual says 215s are required if fitting chains on the front and you're running 265s successfully !

The front has plenty of clearance, except at full lock where they'll touch the radius arms, but that's easy to avoid. Will rub on standard bumper bars though when you turn...

The rear is where there could be issues due to the door jambs, but I don't run them on the back.

You will probably find that the reason they want smaller tyres fitted on the front with snow chains is due to the differance in the wheel diameter with chains fitted on the front and not on the rear and locking the cdl. The front would tend to want to drag the rear tyres causing a slipping effect when driving and when on snow you wouldnt notice it, but if you get onto a hard surface then you would be stressing the driveline. IMHO. Of course this wouldnt matter if you had chains on all 4 wheels.

Cheers Rod

I ran Piranha diamond pattern chains on my D2a with 245/70/16's without any drama.

Only used them a couple of times - but worked without any nasty side effects. I seem to remember the front clearance was reasonably tight.
