Type System Icons in the windows search box (bottom left of screen on the task bar) and select Turn system icons on or off from the search results. Make sure Volume is selected.

Thanks for that but it still will not let me turn volume on. It is like that bit is not available or installed ?? I can control the volume via the function buttons on the keyboard but I would like the icon so I can use the mouse.

Alternatively, choose
'Settings'
'System Display notifications, apps, power'
Notifications & actions' then choose 'Select which icons appear on the taskbar' from that dialog to raise another dialog box from which can select which icons you want to see on the taskbar
Ensure 'volume control' is selected.
The functionality behind 'Select which icons appear on the taskbar' and 'Turn System Icon on or off' seem to have different purposes, I don't know why but the system icon 'volume' must be 'on' before you can decide whether you want to view it on the taskbar, just turning the 'volume' system icon 'on' is not sufficient to see it on the task bar.
It must be selected in both places.

If you now have the icon, you can right click on it and there is a troubleshooter.
If not if you go into the magnifying glass next to the start button, and type volume it comes up on my pc with "realtek High definition audio"
if all else fails maybe go to the site and reinstall it.

I don't think it is shown there unless it is also turned 'on' under 'Turn system icons on or off'
But I think you have said you have already checked there??? So is a mystery to me.

If you go to Settings, then to device manager there should be down the list
a title "Sound Video and games controllers"
and under this title
-intel(R) display audio ( with a speaker sign) I guess if you have an intel processor
-Realtek-high definition Audio (with a speaker sign)
Are they there?

I thought "what if I google this"
I googled "no speaker icon on task bar win 10"
And the first result is a fix.
Regards Philip A
I have listed below a fix from Windows community
1. Left click on windows icon and choose settings.
2. Click on display tab.
3. Change the size of text to 125% Then apply.
4. DO NOT LOG OUT YET. Choose sign out later!
5. Change the text size back to 100% and click apply.
6. Now sign out and sign back in.
Your volume icon will be back. =)
