I've been quoted a cost of $2400 to replace my clutch in my 1995 Defender 300 TDI. The cost includes 12 hours for labour. Does this seem excessive?

Err yes. 😮 was there anything else that they are doing? And do you have sill tanks? I don't quote anymore for vehicles with sill tanks etc or ones that have been boat launching...😠

About$400 for the repco kit. Internet for arm price. 1 Days labour plus frigging around time with floor screws etc. flywheel machining cost plus percent. Prob a bit much. :p

Your guy would be quoting td5 clutch with new dual mass flywheel for that money,he would ring you when he got it apart and say the commonly heard phrase 'I got the wrong one', tdi would be much less.

But even a TD5 kit - Valeo Clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel is only about $700.
