Russrobe,I just ordered some of that paint protector you reccomend.
Mine is due for a dose of Autoglym Polish.Whats the go with with the Zaino??? Polish before or dont bother??? Not much in the way of instructions on their site.

You need to clean and polish first and then apply the clear seal.

Nice one! You'll love it. 12-18month protection vs. the 3 months a natural wax will give.
I bought the pack that came with their polish and 2 applicator pads but It wasn't really suited to the paint condition of mine at high kms it needed a deeper polish. Theirs would be more suited to a scratchless car with minimal defects. I always use Auto Glym Super Resin Polish, have had great results every time.
I also ran a clay bar over mine and it turned the clay black after a wash, worst i've ever had so if you;ve got the time i'd do this Andy.
Wash car(Don't bother drying)
Buy a clay bar pack, mine is Mothers as is comes with 2 bars in case you drop one. Will also have a waterless spray on cleaner which you will need later.
Quick wash + Dry
Polish(Harshness depends on paint condition)
Apply 1st coat of Zaino
24 hours later/next time you're free, use that spray to give the car a quick wipe down/clean with a microfiber cloth and apply the next coat should take in total about 20 mins.
Repeat last step if you like, I might leave it at 2 coats for now..
Sounds painful i know but remember once you've done this once it lasts up to 18months as in 12 months time, if the paint still looks in good condition just give it a wash and apply another layer! Unlike a wax which embeds dirt into the paint.
Hardest part of applying this stuff is restraint. I used about a quarter of a bottle in 2 coats... Making this about 8 times as cost effective as a natural wax. As i usually use half a bottle of that....

As you can see this guy reckons 30 coats to a Corvette so the D4 maybe 15.... This is where the restraint comes in :P

Ah nice one take it you've used clay bars before?? Pretty much if it's sticking as you wipe there's not enough cleaner on.
The applicator pad for Zaino is good as it doesn't absorb too much of the oil. You'll want something similar.
Only bummer is you don't get to see the final result until it's dry the next day!
Think i'm going to stick another layer on in 3-6months. Will take bugger all effort after a normal wash so why not.

Havent used a clay bar before. Not had a paint job worthy of the effort before!!!!

Super easy all you're doing is spraying the cleaner on and running the bar over which extracts the contaminants. Another quick vid.

Seeing as you've washed the car the day before i just use the same spray with a cloth instead the next day to clean the dust off before the next coat of zaino.

I think I will look into this too but just a question on this step ....
I always use Auto Glym Super Resin Polish, have had great results every time.
Did your D4 have many scratches, particularly bush pinstripes?
I've picked up a few and have used the same polish after reading recommendations on here.
And it has worked very well but in the right light you still can see some of the scratches.
So should I keep going with perhaps more applications or harder buffing with the Auto Glym polish or accept some amount of scratching and move on to the other steps (Zaino etc)?
Cheers,
Scott

If you're worried about it Scott, i'd be looking into a buffing machine. I've looked into them and was about to buy one several times.
I have to admit, I usually cover them up with the next step. Problem is I know the buffing machine will get rid of them, I just don't trust myself to use one and not cause more damage than good. Might get one and do a test run on the daily. Machine vs. hand polish is like comparing chalk and cheese... And there lies your problem...

I definitely got rid of a most of the scratches by hand before the next step. But i had 2 pinstripes that were deeper. 1 is gone the other is too deep to get out completely and I'm pretty sure if i had the machine it would be gone after seeing other people's results.

So the Zaino does actually hide mild blemishes/scratches as well as protect the finish?
Russrobe
23rd June 2016, 09:52 PM
Oh yeah definitely. You can't see that deeper pinstripe unless you go looking for it and know where it is.

As you guys would know though, there's only so much clear coat you can buff away at before its all gone. Heavy pinstriping would be a problem....Which is why i bought paint shield.

Yep exactly. I recently bought a 4L tub of Paint Shield too but should have got it sooner.
At least the pinstriping is fairly mild, hence my queries.

When I get lazy with my jag I go to a place which does a good hand wash and machine polish for $170 when I twist their arm, and then I take it home and use the Zaino clear coat straight away.

Scott - I use the Auto Glym Super Resin polish too - it's good stuff. For bush pin stripes though, the best I've found is Re-Po Paint Doctor. It is better (and lasts longer on the shelf) than the Auto Glym and Meguiars scratch removers. The Auto Glym and Meguiars products are both a liquid or cream, and tend to "separate" in the bottle if left standing for too long, whereas the Paint Doctor is a paste.
The young bloke and I both got a few pin stripes on our vehicles last weekend when we were out getting firewood (they show up worse on his grey Amarok than on the white Disco - and the Amarok is wider) But a quick rub with Paint Doctor on Sunday sorted them both. ;)

I'd give that a shot too Scott. I've never had a 4x4 before so pinstripes are a new problem for me. Bmkal seems to have found what works... Best thing is it's a once off seeing as you have Paint Shield so don't have to worry about constantly buffing back the clear!

That is good to know Brian.
I have used Meguiars Scratch X 2.0 successfully:

However it didn't last as long as I hoped.
Did a good job, most scratches disappeared almost completely but slowly the deeper ones have become visible again.
Still way better than doing nothing and I have also polished since then which also made an improvement.
So the overall system steps should be ....
1st - washhttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/06/214.jpg2nd - Re-Po Paint Doctorhttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/06/215.jpg for pinstripes
& perhaps clay bar if weathered.
3rd - Super Resin Polishhttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/06/216.jpg4th - Zainohttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/06/217.jpg
And finally Paint Shield as required

You know Scott if you're still not happy with the finish after Zaino, there's nothing to stop you sticking a coat of wax on top. Worst case scenario of course. Some people do to get a more natural shine. I'm not that fussed though.

I dont think it will be a birthday weekend this weekend,Ive got garden jobs I need to sort.

Whilst on detailing.
Autoglym have a spray can product to protect wheels from brake dust,Supercrapp had a display wheel half treated. If that is how good it is well worth the $22 for the can if you have factory alloys and no akebonos. The GOE wheels dont show the dust so I didnt get any YET.

Good that you didn't. Fine print states not to be used on dark wheels. Apparently leaves a milky residue not visible on silver wheels. I noticed label after buying but Supercheap were good enough to do a refund.

I only usually use it on the paint Andy so can only comment on that. As long as you run the bar over lightly and use enough of the spray you'll be fine. If the bar is sticking and not gliding, you need to put some more on. Btw ours cleaned up great after the mud and clay on Sunday! Remember don't waste your time drying completely before claying as you have to wash it after!
