View Full Version : What is the difference L322 and L320?

I can see the L320 is a Range Rover 'Sport'. And from the sticky it is based on the D3/4 chassis.

But what is the difference between the L320 and L322?

Naive question, i'm really not trying to start something.... just in case this is a sensitive topic.

The L322 is the full sized Range Rover that replaced the P38A - often called the FFRR (Full Fat RR).

They are completely different vehicles. The L322 doesn't have a separate chassis like the L319/L320.

The ride is quite different too. The Sport is as the name suggests is sportier, hugging the road on bends and with firm suspension. The L322 was built for comfort so generally has softer suspension and doesn't corner so well, although the last of the models have computer-controlled shocks (CVDs) which help a lot. Some later Sports also have CVDs but can have other suspension features too to enhance cornering ability.

Often one favours the Sport or the L322, not both.

The L322 was developed when BMW were paying the bills, and the early model had BMW engines. The later L322 (2006 onwards?) had the same Ford and Jaguar engines that the L320 had.

The L320 was developed when Ford was at the helm. They don't really really share much in common apart from a name plate.

As I believe Graeme has rightly pointed out, people tend to either like one or the other....

I have more of a dislike for the L322 ... it has that BMW / Land Rovers of old cross bred feel to it, which makes me cringe... *shudder*

The L320 (L319) is Ford Ford Ford... have you driven a Ford lately? :p :p
or should I say... "its just how a truck should look"? ...either way D3/D4/RRS are great vehicles to repair compared to Land Rover poor (no R&D) engineering of old.

The new new ones I'm sad about no body off....

As mentioned an L322 is the 'real' Range Rover, the L320 is a Disco 3 with a dinner suit on and a 'Range Rover' badge, it is the pretender to the throne...

I'll bugger off now as I'm sure I'll get some hate for that comment :D (but it's true) ;)

The only thing I'll say on the L322's engineering is that it was 98% brilliant - I don't know where you got the idea that there was no or little R&D for the L322 - when it was released it was the most expensive R&D project of any vehicle ever at the time - over 1 Billion dollars at the time before they even sent one of the production line. The transmission in the early models was the only cock up. I don't think anyone would say BMW don't do R&D. Engines, transfer cases, diffs and electronics are all bullet proof and they have a reputation for very good reliability compared to earlier models of the RR.

They are also a very easy vehicle to work on, no bodies off for starter motors, etc... ;)

I think a lot of people that don't know or understand them just think they were an upgraded P38 but it was a clean sheet build that remained largely unchanged for over 10 years - a brilliant production run starting with BMW through to Ford. :)

But the L320 is also a very good vehcile, I've driven more than one, but not my cup of tea - mainly due to the lack of room in the back load area compared to the cavanous room of the L322 but horses for courses - they are a great vehicle if they fit what you need them for, they certainly drive beautifully. :)

I would never say that about an L320. I usually say they are a Disco 3 in a fancy dress...:angel:.

So far the only shared parts I have found between my 07 Vogue and Dad's 05 Sport are the fog lights in the front bumper bar.

Yeah, it's a posh frock, not a dinner suit. :D

Coming from a 1989 110, I think the cornering, steering, power, torque, comfort, torque & power is wow.

Some of you guys are pretty hard markers. I own a 2012 L322 and love it. Prior to that I bought a new 2010 RRS and thought that was a pretty good car too. It took us and our camper trailer all over the Kimberley in great comfort and excellent reliability. As has our L322 - although it got more harsh treatment, on worse roads, and while even more comfortable than the Sport, suffered a pretty catastrophic shock absorber failure at one point.
My only real gripe with my L322 is the lack of availability of wheels any smaller than 20", which severely limits rough road ability, and plays havoc with my peace of mind. At least my Sport could fit 19s.

The MY11/12 were available with 19" but D4 19" also fit with only 3-4mm less offset, far less difference than the GOE's with 17-18mm lsss offset, not that they fit over the brakes. I had my D4's rims on the L322 for a couple of weeks until the larger 20" tyres were obtained.

I might still change to 19" when the current tyres need replacing.

My 19" D4 wheels fit Graeme's 4.4 TDV8 L322, but your L322 can fit much larger 20" tyres than the D4/RRS can as they have more room in the wheel arch - 275/55R20 have more sidewall than any 19" tyre you can get.

Edit - Beat me to it!

Really? The D4 19s fit on the L322? I had no idea. Re the 275/55R20 tyres, I would have thought there would be some rubbing on full lock, no?

Edit: Whoops, seem to have hijacked Jazzman's thread, sorry. Can anyone point me at a relevant L322 thread about tyres?
