Well, looks like Wofie and family are going to get to play again. From the 26th to the 30th we're going to Fraser style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I just thought I'd run out itinerary past you all for comment.. as I've never been there (well actually I went when I was 4).

Day 1
Wednesday.
Low tide 8:30ish. Get to the island about then. Drive to Dundabara Camping ground up the beach (looking around as we go) and set camp.

Thursday.
Drive north to waddy point and have a look around. Maybe pop down to Eli creek for a swim.

Friday.
Break camp and work back south.. do some of the inland drives. Camp at central station. Start looking around the lakes.

Saturday
Look around the lakes some more.

Sunday
Head on home.

Comments please style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif I'm particularly interested in what it's like camping at Central Station. Will we be carried away by the insects?

Thanks all style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

8) sounds like a lot to pack in to a few days ,if your like me you'll want to go back again and again, five days just wasnt enough!!!!!!
Yuor day two itinerary of waddy point then back to Eli mite be a tad exuberant depending on tides, inless of course you dont mind driving on the "high-tide highway",eg, the soft stuff at the top of the beach,it can be hard on the vehicle ,motor wise at times unless there has been a bit of a wet ,then it is slightly better, but what the heck ,just go and have some fun and enjoy paradise 8) 8) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Cool, that's what I need to know. This trip was only ever going to be a look around/learning exercise. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Yes, and I haven't factored in any fishing into it this time... next time. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

When coming back why not drive down the beach from Fraser via Double Is point and come off the beach at Noosa - it is a nice drive.

Sounds good style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

How long does it take... is it tidal, and is there a car wash at Noosa? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

1. you MUST go to Eli creek, not maybe.

2. Sounds like a good trip for a few days. Make sure you visit the Champagne pools if you have time.

3. The drive south on the beach (Rainbow then Cooloola) is tidal, of course. It's a beach. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif Do take the inland track between Rainbow and Cooloola so as not be be one of those casualties of the Rainbow Beach rocks.

If you find yourself driving through Waddy Point campground pop into teh showers and check whether it takes $1 coins, for Ferno please.

Enjoy !!!

Sorry I can;t make this trip with yer, mate but as discussed - other commitments.

A couple of hours the most - it is tidal. Vlad has a point - when I did the trip in my suzuki a long while back the rocks were all wrong so went via the track to Cooloola - then along the beach - there was/is a car wash point at the Noosa end near the ferry.

When I did the trip in my subaru a few years back I was able to go around the rocks at the rainbow beach end OK but it is dodgy. I suggest you watch what the others are doing if they are getting around go for it - if not go the track as it is a nice diversion in itself.

The tour buses go from Noosa up to Fraser and back that way on their day trips. (or at least they used to if they don't now)

I haven't done the trip for a few years now - I am sure there is someone here with the latest information.

Definetly do the beach run back if you have time, the tides look good, you have a low at 12:09 on the 30th which will suit driving back along the beach as long as you are at rainbow around 12-1:30ish however as one would want to make the most of frazer you probably don't want to rush getting off frazer on your last day. In all the trips I have done along the beach only once has the rocks been unpassable at dead low tide.

Its the right weather for spotting white pointers as well!!!!!.

Have a good trip.

Simple work around for that one.. next time we'll all go together. That way we can have a girls defender and the boys defender. That way we can take in Frasers "natural attractions" with impunity style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

For anyone else interested there is an articl e written from a first timers prespective of a trip to Fraser Island, in the current Australian 4WD Monthly magazine. Not a bad read. Be warned though that despite what it says firewood is generally NOT provided (though you MAY get lucky)

Outlaw
26th October 2005, 09:18 AM
Please be aware that there is a total fire ban in force on fraser island from the 7th october until further notice... and a 50km speed limit has been designated for the Hook Point Rd.

And you can see the current Fraser island conditions report here http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/fraser

Outlaw
26th October 2005, 09:21 AM
Woops 8O 8O 8O maybe i should have checked that website before i posted as the total fire ban has been lifted due to recent storms

But all firewood should be taken on to the island with you and should be milled timber/firewood and not tree branches etc. Basically the rangers way of confirming you brought the wood with you and not found it on the island

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'> Ban lifted on fires in parks and forests in southern Queensland
The general prohibition on open fires and wood BBQs in southern Queensland parks and forests has been lifted, as fire dangers have eased following recent storms and showers. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PERMANENT PROHIBITION ON FIRES ON FRASER ISLAND, EXCEPT FOR THE FIRE RINGS AT DUNDUBARA AND WADDY POINT, HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED. Visitors are reminded to be very careful with fires, observe any local fire restrictions, and use only the fireplaces and BBQs where provided.[/b][/quote]

VladTepes
26th October 2005, 09:30 AM
Its a shame that there aren't more of those 'fire rings' available around the place. It's getting harder and harder to find a part of this magnificent Austrtalian land where you are bloody well allowed to use a camp oven.

And the drought has little to do with it.

Why not have fire rings at Central station, and other places ?

BECAUSE, that's why. (Bureaucratic bull****) :!:

Cool Captain, we'll wait for the trip report and photo's :-)

Fraser is a fantastic place I must say. Was up there around New Years a few years ago with one of my brothers who (at that time) had a Disco TD5.

For some reason that I do not understand, he got stuck on the beach at one point where I did not... well it was only a "short-stuck". Everytime he kept trying to drive it either stalled or span the wheels, but before I could go back and have a look he was out and following along.

People driving on the beaches where-ever they please really was annoying though, it's suppose to be high-way code on the beaches (as far as I know) which also designates which side of the "road" you are suppose to drive on....

Ok, here's a bit of a report. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif I am in no way attempting to match Vlad's type-a-thon style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Wednesday we went up there... a little late as usual. Got the barge over no problem and arrived at about 1000 so took the inland route north from inskip point. The road was pretty good I thought style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif We generally enjoyed the drive north.. got through Eli no worries and camped at Dundaburra. Found a nice spot too . style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif We went out for a quick spin to Eli for a swim that afternoon style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Thursday we went north to the Champagne Pools for a swim. Indian sand was suprisingly loose but no problems. The approach from the beach to the Champagne pools was also loose. Some people had been bogged that day. The swim was good too.

We then headed up to Ocean Lake.. ok.. but wouldn't bother with it next time. Then up to Ngkala Rocks. We did a U-turn then as we wanted to head back to camp. Unfortunately due to a navigation feature we missed Waddy point (which I wanted to see). style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Friday We drove south to pick up the Poyungan valley scenic drive and had a swim at lake Garrawonga. We went to Happy Valley for picnic lunch. this was the drive I enjoyed most of the whole trip. Absolutely lovely style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

We then did the northern forrests tourist drive which was only average. The highlight was lake Allum and the turtles. Downside was my little girl getting wrongfooted on the viewing steps and rolling into the lake    Luckily she was ok. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Saturday we headed south to Eurong and headed for lake Birrabeen. This was excellent and we enjoyed a swim in peace until two troopies worth of backpackers turned up  We then headed onto Lake McKenzie... and every man, his dog, and 500 backpackers were there.

We went home via the Lkes tourist drive which was pretty good, but we didn't have time to stop much due to toddler issues 8O Anway we had a good swim at Eli on the way home and saw a 5 foot eel... 8) 8)

Sunday we packed off and headed home style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif We had a really great time style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Highlights.
- Great fun driving around the island.
- Eli creek.
- Swimming in the lakes
- 2 million backpackers that were great eye candy and constantly amusing in their 4wd skills (lack thereof).
- nice campground with nice people (including another 2005 Defender style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif )

Lowlights.
- 2 million backpackers... moving in to your tranqil lake and paying football in the water
- no white pointers style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Funnies...
- Heading home at high tide.. seeing a hump in the sand... wheel tracks up and then a 2 metre gap until the tracks continued style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
- Back packers asking me how to get through Eli at high tide... they look at the fender and think I've been doing it for a long time style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
- Watching a different troopy getting itself bogged to the rails at Eli ... spinning the rears furiously while the fronts just rolled. I said to one of the BP's watching... "mate you gotta put that thing in 4wd" he said "oh no... I'll go and tell him" Backpackers emerged from everwhere and pushed it out and off it went.
- a german BP girl looking at me like a crazy as I shushed her and held out my 5 foot long fish hands... then the eel popped out. You should have seen her eyes... I know mine were on other things style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I reckon we should add this as a post in my Fraser Is thread in the Qld trip report forum, and perhaps clean that thread up a bit so it remains pertinent to the point ie the Fraser experience - would make it a good resource for potential Fraser visitors to use.
