Because I dont drive it everyday anymore[ ] things tend to come as a bit of a surprise when they happen,,,
Got in Bub the other day to get something in town and was a bit shocked to find a shudder from the clutch on take-off.
Only from a dead stop, and only from normal revs,
can be quite harsh.
clutch has done around 160,000 kms
Asked Mrs Pedro [who does drive it everyday] about the shudder and her reply?
"use more revs"

Assuming the clutch is still OK,
Check for oil leaks onto the clutch
The other is busted engine/gearbox mounts
The flywheel could need machining.

ok,,
there is an oil stain on the bellhousing,, also at the front of the sump(before the plug,,)
one lone drop waiting to drip.
both engine mounts look ok.

We've just replaced the rear A-frame ball joint on the County. That fixed the clutch judder which, like yours, only occurred on starting from rest..

Changed first clutch out at 167428 traded the car at 450474 with the same clutch (first clutch turned out to be the spigot bush) - 1976 Rangie

I should have said that over and above the shudder there was a banging from the rear when I hit bumps.
The replacement of the balljoint was to fix this but it had the side benefit of getting rid of the shudder.

Oil on the plate, hard spots in the flywheel or loose springs in the plate. I did my car last week end, 155k, linings looked like new but the centre hub was loose as due to weak springs. New borg and beck, ground flywheel and its a new car. Smooth as and less back lash in the drive train. I freshened up the 5 speed while it was out with some new bearings and on inspection found a cracked 1st/2nd syncro hub, I suspect this has been there for sometime. Anyway it's all good now, drives like new, a little notchy( only done 300k), but then I did set up the preloads tighter then they were.

B&B $440
exchange flywheel $60
engine rear main seal $15
Exhaust gaskets $10
Full set of Timken bearings for the 5 speed about $200,
gasket kit for the box $40.
Oh and a new 1st/2nd syncro hub kit including baulk rings etc $420 ($690 + tax LR price).
All to fix an oil leak, who would have though.

You said 160k on that clutch????
Damn thats good.... Time for a new one id say.
I just did mine and also did the rear main and gearbox seals.

At 155k mine looked like new apart from the loose centre, in fact if someone told you it was 12months old you believe them. V8s are not has hard as the TDIs on clutches.

I had a subaru will very similar problem, clutch was juddery, mildly slippy, and I had trouble finding contact point in first when the car was cold.
Pinhole leak in one of those seals so oil got onto the clutch.
I drove it for about 10k until the gearbox died and got the mechanic to do it while everything was out.
If the gearbox hadn't gone I would have put up with it until it died.
- But I bought the subaru for rego and planned to send it to the wreckers when first rego ran out. Poor thing wouldn't die. Longest I ever owned a car until someone totalled it from behind and I suddenly needed a Land Rover.
cheers

Clutch shudder is caused by nackered clutch. Cracks in the preessure plate or clutch plate Ither way you will need a new clutch. Happens with time and heat
Sorry stop looking for cheap ways out style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Shaunp, when can you pop round to my place and do exactly the same thing to my Isuzu County? I'll even feed you all the snags you can eat style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
If you've got better things to do, I'll understand. Plan B is where I take a week off work and have a crack at it my self
Are there many special tools required for the gearbox job? Flipping through the workshop manual , there seems to be heaps.
Bruce.

For the LT77 5 speed you really only need some pullers and a press. I made a puller to get the seal track of the back of the main shaft, Just a Super cheap 3 jaw that I ground down to fit and made some extensions for. Sometimes you need a puller to get 5th off the layshaft as well. You need a rattle gun to undo the nut on 5th and I have been told by Warren at MR that they on occasion have had to heat 5th up red hot to get it off. The couple I have done have come off with a pair of screw drivers and a tap on the layshaft. There is a bearing cup in the back of the input shaft that the main shaft runs in (this often fails) it is in a blind hole so you need a slide hammer to get it out or do it like I did just run a weld in the cup quickly and bang it on the bench and it will fall out as it cools. I put an engine crane in through the door and dropped the box on the gound. Started after tea and had it out by 11pm. Takes me around 6 hours to rebuild the box if it come a part ok. I reckon I could do one almost in a weekend if I had all the parts. I had hoped to this with mine but a syncro hub had to come from Sydney so the car sat idle for most of Sunday, all of Monday. Picked up the syncro hub on Tuesday avro on the way home from work had the box together by about 8 Pm, Car was running Wednesday avro. So 3 days would be an easy job, out, rebuilt and back in. Assuming you have all the bits. I did bearings and 1st/2nd syncro hub kit, clutch, flywheel, rear main seal in the engine. Didn't do the transfer. I also found what the black stuff is that I clean out of the gear box filter is, it's paint, the inside of the box was painted and the paint was flaking off.

I think they would charge about $1k to do a clutch, but I could be wrong. I spent $1200 on parts but I did way more than the clutch, and the syncro hub kit was $420 alone.

I like the idea of that synchro hub mod---
1st 2 second can get to be a grind---
after EVERYONES input( style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif ) including people off-line
I am just gunna drive it till it breaks.
or the shudder become SO bad as to be undrivable.
Thanks everyone style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I reckon that's a good idea, mine shuddered a bit but the lining were like new, I reckon it would have done another 150k, truth be known. My car was worse in reverse. It would still be in there if it didnt start leaking oil badly.
