I've started a new thread - my bad - I shouldn't have hijacked Greg's really...
So, Island 4x4 and Duckworth parts will both get two rear Bilsten shockies landed in Australia for under $1000 which is pretty good given the $3000 starting price with LR Australia,
cheers

Are you sure yours are the CVD (continuously variable damper) version?

I know when I was getting shocks for my Defender I ordered from the uk and then found out they couldn't send them to Australia due to being under pressure. After a few weeks of nothing I ended up having to cancel and get local as they couldn't post them.
Just be wary of this when ordering.

I had the same experience with e-diff oil (can't remember the particular seller) but then had no problems getting shocks from Duckworths.

Will you be hanging onto the originals? I assume they aren't leaking and still useful as spares especially if they could be left with someone who could ship them to you if you're stuck outback with a dead one on the car.
Edit: It appears that the difference between left and right versions is the combination top mount plate and shield and therefore only 1 shock would need to be carried as a spare and the top mount swapped to use it on the other side. Presumably the shaft cannot be rotated 180 degrees due to the internal electrical connection. The electrical connector is in the top of the shaft itself so unaffected by removing and swapping the mount.
More info - the top mount plate has its own part# and applies to both left and right shocks and to CVD and non-CVD shocks. Hence simply loosen the top nut and rotate the bracket 180 degrees! The mount hole appears to be round, without any keying for the shaft. Just check that the bracket's angular range matches the removed one to ensure that it rotates adequately to cater for suspension movement.

Here's a picture of one of the shocks showing both the Bilstein and LR logos along with the LR assembly part number.

Thanks Graeme - very useful information indeed - yes I was going to keep both and investigate if they can be rebuilt as spares. Neither are leaking, as you say.

I note that Arnotts (US) supply refurbished L322 front CVD struts. However they fit a new Arnotts air-spring but only test, clean and paint the exchanged shocks - they do not refurbish them.

Thought I would resurrect this thread.
After a couple of trips in the Vogue it has destroyed one rear shock absorber and it looks like the other one isn't far behind. Is just from the rocks being thrown up by the front tyres by the look but they do seem to be pretty vulnerable where they sit, and at about $1,000 ea I would prefer to find a fix.
Anyone had similar issues or know of easy fixes? I will probably just make up some protection for them- maybe from 3" rubber suction hose or something along those lines that I can slip over the lower part.
Also noticed, as discussed previously, that the originals were branded Bilstein as well as LR. Went with the genuine branded this time- unsure if there would be any difference with QC etc between them and straight Bilstein.
Thanks
James

Have your shocks done a lot of hard work?
Stones hitting the reservoir shouldn't be a problem unless punctured as they only hold oil.
I'll be fitting Bilsteins when mine get too tired.

Hi Graeme, yes the drivers side has dumped all of the oil and similar wounds on the other one but no leaks yet.

...and should have mentioned, oil is only coming from the reservoir, or the join between the reservoir and the body. top / seal area is all dry.

Does it look as though the reservoir has taken a hard knock or just pounded by smaller rocks?

I just checked mine which have quite a few significant dents but aren't leaking. I wonder if a decent rock hit the plate at the bottom the seal might be upset.
