View Full Version : Which 19" rims for 2013 RRS?

I have a RRS 2013 with 20? wheels. I'm looking for 19? rims and don't want to void insurance etc. I'm thinking of using the Cooper LTZ, either 255/55/19 or 255/50/19.
- What Land Rovers can I source suitable wheels from? (D4, RRS, what model years)?
- What load rating do they need to be?
- What part numbers should I look for (or where can I find the part numbers)?
I've seen RRS 2011 rim sets on eBay but am not sure if these will work on my younger vehicle.
TIA.

They're all fine - the Discovery wheels have a higher load rating so you can only improve on the RRS rated wheels.
There's a bit of discussion on the L319 forum at the moment in a thread about 20" v 19" tyre options, worth thinking about before you commit.
It's a definite dilemma. I've experienced in other cars what a difference to ride there can be for the sake of one inch of rim size, but is the effort and cost of going to 19s with more limited tyre options (FWIW there seem to be more becoming available so I don't know if that's as valid as it once was) worth it compared to just saving the bickies until I can afford go all the way and get a set of 18" compomotives? At the moment I'm thinking personally I'll stick with the 20s until such time.

If swapping to 19", D4 19" would be preferred to RRS 19" due to being slightly narrower so that the sidewalls are stretched just a little less. However even though a brother recently destroyed 2 of his 265/50R20 Nittos on the Anne Beadell, 1 due to being distracted and the other by an innocuous-looking rock with pressures probably too low for the tyre, this tyre and size seem a reasonable compromise if not going to 18".

Hi Discomarsh,
I've put the standard RRS 19 inch rims on with a 255 / 50 / 19 tyre just to try and get that bit more sidewall. I have a pretty aggressive tread, looks much like an AT however just that little bit less block pattern. I can't remember the brand I think it is Goodyear, to late to go up to the shed tonight I'll post tomorrow.
Use this for travelling with the camper trailer.
Had a look this morning they are Goodyear Wrangler MT / R 's look good even if they turn out to be useless...............
Cheers Marty

How big can I go before my insurance company won't honour my insurance or the RMS gets cranky?

255 / 50 / 19 tyre.. they are Goodyear Wrangler MT / RThey must be 255/55R19, the standard Disco size as the MTRs weren't made in 255/50R19.

Graeme,
You run 275/55 on 20" rims. These are 811 mm diameter versus 728 mm for the standard 275/40r20.
- Do these larger tyres rub?
- Does it put the speedo out about 10%?
- Can you fit a spare of the same size?
- Does it have any affect on the uni-joints or other components?
- Does it affect acceleration? (I guess the V8 isn't affected much.)

Mine is a L322 with sub-frames rather than a chassis and also has more guard clearance so no problems with this size, as well as the standard dia being 30" rather than 29". The spare is inside rather than underneath so also not comparable.
Larger tyres don't have any impact on suspension or drive-line geometry or wear, just lower engine revs for a given gear and speed which may or may not impact the driveability. I'd rather have the L322 TDV8's original gearing due to its quite high ratio diffs for slightly higher revs in 8th when towing the van at 100 kph but your overall top gear ratio is significantly lower.

I took Graeme's advice and got some 19" wheels from a D4. An inch narrower than RRS rims, so the rims are better protected, plus D4 rims have a higher load rating. They have Cooper LTZs on them, 255/55. My RRS spare has the same wheel dimensions (but not load rating) as the D4 rims and there is now a Cooper on that wheel too.
Sidewall is improved (from 110 mm to 140 mm) but not nearly as much as on my D2a (184 mm with 245/75 r16s). Still, I feel much more confident with these tyres.
Speedo with the OEM 275/40 r20s was 95 km/h (GPS) while the speedo read 100 km/h. It's now close to spot on with 255/55 r19s.
NSW RMS allow an increase in rolling diameter of 7% of OEM wheels. I only went about halfway--from 738-mm to 763-mm (OEM 255-50 r19 spare to current Coopers). Speed rating of these Coopers is lower than OEM (210 km/h v 300 km/h) but still above RMS's 140 km/h. Load rating is increased (975 kg to 1090 kg per tyre).
So, tyres and wheels are still well and truly legal, and no rubbing of course!

I just accosted a stranger in my local supermarket carpark to ask him about the tyres on his late model L320 RRS (#gotitbad).
He had Cooper LTZs in 275/55/20, no rubbing he said. Couldn't fit spare under car.
It looked like a lot of rubber in those arches - maybe 15mm max between the tyre and the front of the rear guard.

That's a BIG tyre. 811-mm or 31.9 inches diameter. Larger than the maximum 7% increase allowed by RMS by 21-mm. Would throw the speedo out 5 - 10%.

It doesn't look so big on the new Sport but yeah, massive on the L320. Would have taken a pic if it didn't feel a bit rude.

The L494 has 31" tyres so 32" isn't the increase that it is on the L320's 30". However the size doesn't look excessive on my L322 which also has 30" normally but plenty of room under the guards to fit them. My speedo is spot-on at 100 kph but should get progressively slow as speed increases due to LR's standard 2 kph+3.5% fudge factor for Oz, but only by about 2 kph at 200 kph so nothing that's going to worry me.
