so I've got a set of wolf rims to get rid of the damn tubes...
my zxl's are only about 80% worn but they are 12+ years old and I've had one split up the sidewall so I wanna replace them.
the choices seem to be...
new zxl's for about 220 each.
bfg 255/85r16's for about 380 each
hankook 255/85r16's for about 320 each.
Everyone seems to be fitting 255/85's on their 4x4's but what about the 6x6's? I do a bit of stuff on the beach so the extra width and more flexible sidewall would be nice... but the zxl's seem to go well off road and seem bulletproof - don't bag too well on the sand though.
Has anyone put 255/85's on their 6x6? How did it go? Any scrubbing? Any problems? Was it a worthwhile upgrade? Anyone wish they'd stuck with the stock 7.5's?
thoughts? comments? suggestions? I'm about to drop 2500+ on tyres so I'm open to any comments!

Tyres have a load rating. Make sure you take that into account, as well as the GVM of the 6x6, when selecting a suitable tyre.

Good point....
The zxl's are 1250 kg load rating
The bfg's are 1550kg
So no issue there.... It really comes down to do the 255/85 fit on the 6x6 without issue? And does the extra footprint actually translate to real world improvement on sand?
It's an almost thousand dollar question!

A little over 9t. You're well covered there.
How does the width and offset compare between the two rims?
How does the tread width compare between the two tyres?

Oh, and, for my own interest, how does the load rating between the two rims compare?

wolf rims are 2200kg
standard perentie rims I don't know.... but 2200 per rim gives me *theoretical* gvm of 13 tonnes. I reckon that's enough!

xzl's (standard issue) are 7.5 inches wide. 255's are 10 inches wide.
standard perentie rims are 6".
wolf rims are 6.5".
offsets... don't know!
but I do know others are running wolf rims with 255/85's on them so I guess they fit ok on the 4x4. but not sure on the 6x6. I imagine the rear is fine as there's acres of room. but not sure on the front

I put 255/100 Michies on mine. The equivalent of the old 900 x 16 I cant get any more.

The difference between my 7.50x16 steel treks and 255/85 BFGs (on my 4x4) was like night and day, especially on sand.

pulled the trigger on 7 x bfg 255/85r16 muds today... hurt the wallet
i did consider buying 2 new xzl's for the front and just running out the old ones on the rear... the xzl's have heaps of tread but are 12+ years old and I've already had one crack up the sidewall. i can live with a cracked sidewall on the rear but not the front
but three tyre shops all told me the xzl's are discontinued... not out of stock. FINISHED. replaced with agilis they said.... they look like something you'd put on a commodore.
so new bfg's going on new wolf rims and original set of rims and tyres will be up for sale next week
i hope they fit ok. i have this fear that they're gunna touch each other and lock up on articulation in the rear... it's a tight fit.
