View Full Version : Leaking sunroof drain - preminate situation?

Unfortunately yesterday i found about 3lt of water on the passenger side of my '06 D3. I read up on known issues and have figured it out to be the drain pipe for the sunroof. All the solutions I read involve replacing perished parts and keeping it clean in the future. Getting access to the 90' grommet that has failed is pretty time consuming and not much fun.

Has anyone tried fixing the design issue to make a preminate solution? I removed the scuttle and can see the perfect spot to drill a hole and run the drain pipe through at a much higher position. It's the area that the windscreen drains off anyway, so I can't see it being an issue further down the line so long as it's all sealed up with a grommet and a bit of silicone.

Your thoughts?

Last grommet lasted 10 years..
Are you planning to keep it another 10?

Designers don't make things complex for fun - I'd check the reasoning they drain where they do...

Silicone will peel up in short order (always does)..

Yeah, fair call. I guess the biggest advantage is access. I'd use polyurethane and not silicone. The only reason I can think of as to why it sits behind the fuse box is because the pipe is installed first. I'll rethink my strategy.

Finally got round to checking the sunroof drains on my D3 and as I suspected only one is open. I'll be ordering replacement parts (EEH500120) either from my local dealer or a UK supplier depending on who is cheapest (anyone know by any chance?). I've found a couple of LR technical bullitens courtesy of our friends at Disco3.co.uk which explain it all pretty well.
