I've just discovered that the trailer tail-lights don't stay on with the ign off when the headlight switch is on parkers - what a crazy idea! I'm assuming it's a standard feature rather than something amiss. I thought that I had been driving after dark without trailer lights until I got suspicious and started the engine.
These vehicles have another crazy lighting feature whereby the interior lights must be on for the puddle lights to operate whereas the D4's puddle lights operate independently of the interior lights.

Same thing with my '95 Camry. I think it is a modern car thing. They turn off the lights when you turn off the car so you don't get a flat battery.

But the car's parkers stay on as expected.

Something wrong there.
Shouldn't the car's parkers be off?

No, I purposefully left them on.

Something fishy going on as no trailer tail-lights tonight even with the engine running. A job for tomorrow!
Edit: Just a bad connection between 2 plugs that must have been vibrated enough on starting the engine to make contact or to increase the voltage enough to allow enough current. The trailer uses an adapter plug to both convert the plugs and to make the lead long enough to reach the RR's socket that is a long way forward of the ball. The connection between the trailer plug and the converter socket wasn't too flash, probably too dirty to make good contact.
