Hi all , replaced my timing belts recently and was going to replace the oil pump as well but didn't have the TTY bolts for crank, got the bolts now , ready to do the oil pump, not to sure about the front crankshaft seal, i have read that it is usually installed after the pump is in , my seal is already in the pump , is it ok to fit it as it is, check out the picture, thx for any advise

I would leave the seal in the housing where at least you know its been properly fitted to the housing.

You will find you cant leave the seal in the oil pump housing before its installed as the drive for the oil pump (which can move around) needs to engage on the crankshaft, normally there is a plastic locater already installed into the pump housing that keeps the drive lined up.

Looks like the plastic locator has already been removed in the pics above.

Can't the drive be manually aligned before fitting the housing?

If I remember correctly the plastic locator ring gets pushed out by the crank anyway so as long as the pump is aligned it should wirk.
The main issue I see is trying to see if you have the inner lip of the seal fitted correctly or not.

The difficulty in trying to align the pump drive without the plastic guide that comes with the pump is that the drive not only moves in a rotational direction (not a issue) it can also move quite readily in a vertical plain, and consider the seal is on and the sump lip is on the bottom, it doesnt really give you much room to move the pump around to engage the pump drive.
The other issue is the seal is quite a hard material, the applicator for fitting it is designed to slightly expand the seal, once fitted, the seal after xx amount of hours reforms around the crankshaft, from memory the workshop manual states the seal must be left so many hours before start up.
Also I think you might risk damaging the seal if you try and fit the pump with it in situ, or more likely the seal will simply pop out of the oil pump housing.

I note that the WSM states to install the oil pump housing then install the seal and therefore find it strange and misleading that the seal is already fitted to a new housing.

The manual States 4 hours for the Teflon seal, be careful not to expand it to much as the shrinkage is minimal , believe me I have been thru the wringer with front oil pump seals.
Would be good to hear where that oil pump came from as every 1 I have seen has the locator ring fitted. Personally If it was me I would remove the seal and fit it after the pump is installed. It's a big job to remove it all because the seal has a folded lip or some form of damage.
Remember to check the shaft when the pump is off incase it's got a burr on it like mine had- I found out the hard way 2 oil seals later.
Cheers Ean

well pump in , you guys were right can't fit the pump with the seal in place, just no way of lining it up , even without the seal in and no locator plastic thing it took ages to get it lined up using mirrors is always hard, this is where the pump came from and suggest to anyone about to buy a pump that it has the locator ring.
any way all back together no leaks and a bit of peace of mind thats its done, thx for your help..
heres where the pump came from

I would suggest that ebay seller is selling off take off pumps or ones that have been maybe rejected/recalled after fitting to assembly line engines IE non started engines.
