Do you have a compressor . Take the fuel cap off use a rag around the filler and pressurise the tank;)

You can always fill the new filter with diesel as another option. Either new diesel from somewhere or I pour the contents of the old filter into the new via some stocking type material. I change it every 10K with the oil and nothing noticeable is ever it in. I also drain the filter of any water before I remove the old.

Thanks all
I pressurized the tank and found that to be most effective. Glad l worked this out before the need arose to do it in the field. My assumption that a priming pump as per the TD5 was a poor assumption to make!

You would think being a Defender it would've a hand pump on the injectors, or the vacuum pump would have the balls to pull it through from the tank, or an electric prime pump. Seems they just don't makes 4x4 to be genuine players anymore. Still I guess there is always a work around and if your remote you will have compressor.
good to hear it went well.

Half correct, the 2.4 tdci has to be primed, but the 2.2 tdci has an in-tank lift pump.
Or do as I and a few others have done and add a secondary diesel fuel filter with a pump head on it to get your juices flowing. ;)

Hi Toxic_Avenger,

That's a great idea! Any suggestions as to model? Before or after the factory filter?

Generally on common rail systems, you would add a 'secondary' filter of a lower micron rating than the factory filter. ie successively smaller filter tolerances to get the contaminants out.
IIRC factory filter is 5 micron, I added a 2 micron secondary filter after it. It lives next to the fuel cooler on the LHS chassis rail, inbound.
I have some info and pics in my build / ramblings thread, spread over a few posts starting with this one (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/197704-meet-my-90-share-adventure-8.html#post2531648).
Part number I used is DCS029 from Diesel care. Although there are plenty of other options out there with the priming feature. It works fine on my 2.2 tdci.

Lets hope the 2.2 is less prone to the TD5 in-tank fuel pump failings. Honestly in tank pumps make as much sense as no drain hole on the tank.
Again given these trucks are now pretty fickle, I added a drain plug to my tank when flushing the system out. If one happens to get a tank of bad fuel, one usually only has one or two filters which won't go far. Maybe back to another fuel station if lucky. Sirens and water traps may alert you but unless you can dump the tank relatively easily your no further down the track. Pulling the tank out to dump it is not the best day out.

External lift pump, water sirens, 2 micron filter, tank drain hole should have all been standard don't you think on a defender. Or are they made to drive around London now days instead Africa or the farm for that matter.

Agree with what you're saying. There is always ideals and concessions in any car, the defender is no different.

As for standard equipment, we also should have been issued dual zone climate control, cruise control, massaging seats, full length sunroofs, hermetically sealed cabin... But IMO, the things they left out make it just as much fun.

...water sirens, ...

If they came with Sirens, it may have been more challenging to get approval for the purchase of mine.

yes but all those blokes still look very concerned. Being an LR siren it will fail, perhaps the boat is full of water.

those sirens are putting the oarsman off his stroke.....

the oarsman on the port side is trying very hard to avert his eyes.

the artist even put in a blonde , brunette and a redhead.

this painting is far more interesting than fuel filters.

The oarsman are rowing with their backs to the direction of travel.
The port side oarsman is copping a look straight into the brunette's chest, as I would.
Then there's that kinky bugger that's ties to the mast. Don't get me started.

I'm happy that we can all appreciate good art just as the artist intended.

The guy in the blue is getting an eye full of the blond. Looks likes a first time for him.

Bit like the first time he reads the LR brochure. Full of dreams and desires but so far from reality after he has signed the deal. lol. Then he discovers his smoking hot blond is as unpredictable as his new Defender. Furthermore what LR find wrong with it on any given service has him amazed. :eek2:
