GPS Navigation advice needed

I am looking at getting some sort of GPS 4x4 track navigation system. The only ones I have ever used have been in friends sedans and they have been anything but user friendly. I have the pov pack my15 Disco without GPS. So what are people using? what size screens. Something that is user friendly would be ideal for us as we are not tech heads... easy to update and not too extreme in price. We have just put a deposit on a camper trailer and want to do the North of WA building up to the Gibb River road next year. TIA Aaron.:D

If you have a tablet , smartphone look at Hema map app.

I have an iPad and iPhone and run hema app on both and it works well.

As for size the full sized iPad seems great but does take a lot of room.
I have not tried the iPad mini but reckon that may be a good option.

But first try the app first.

There are two hema apps one around $30 to $40 and the other is around $99, go for the $99 one.

The app comes complete with a lot of good maps.

I have an iPad mini and the $99 Hema with it also on my phone as back-up. It's excellent.

I've done a homemade mount using the coin drawer and brackets into the CD drawer, which is alright but not great.

Generally the navigator holds the iPad or it sits somewhere handy.

Only used for off-road as I have the LR system for on-road.

Hi Tombie, Which offroad maps did you download for your Garmin. Nice mount you have there as well.

Aaron, We are looking at the Hema $99 maps for the wifes iPad mini, to be mounted on a Ram mount with Ram mount adaptor. But if Tombie's offroad maps are available for the Garmin nuvicamLMT we already have then that would be preferable. Still worth having the iPad set up as a standby.

We have the Hema downloads on both our smartphones and our Samsung Galaxy tablet and it meets our needs.
In the city we just use Google maps on our smartphones. Actually, Google maps is also quite good in most rural areas. For example, I was surprised to see it worked OK out in The Simpson Desert.

I was in the same boat just recently. I have a VMS but the USB port broke and it no longer charges. I contemplated buying a new VMS but opted instead for a tablet and mapping app. I bought a 7" Lenovo tablet running Android for $97. I downloaded Memory Maps and bought the WA Topo map 25K for about $93. I bought some Velcro strips and attached the tablet to the VMS windscreen mount for now, but I am going to mount it in the Rangie somehow permanently. The tablet is not the sim version, however I tether it to my phone to switch between Memory Maps and Google Maps. Memory Maps allows me to import all my waypoints and tracks I had saved on the VMS.

I've been running OziExplorer on a mobile device for about 14 years now.
Firstly on a WinCE PDA, then finally on a Galaxy Tab7.
OziExplorer is great if you like to fully manage your maps between your mobile device and PC and all the fiddly bits that it can help with.

The only thing Ozi can't do is turn by turn navigation. It just displays the maps for you on a screen and shows you where you are in relation to that area and where you're going.

Comes on a MicroSD you just slot in and you're done.

Thanks Tombie, I did check their website & seems the LMT is not a compatible device. Probably because the micro SD slot is already utilised for the dash cam!

Ah. You have the NuviCam version..

I have the Drivesmart 60LMT so the slot is open.

We went with the NuviCam versions as there is not a lot of space on a Defender windscreen for a GPS & seperate dash cam. Received my ram mounts for the iPad now so all is good. Just have to decide on which off road maps to get, probably Hema 4WD Maps or VMS Map Explorer 3D?
