Hi Rob

I wouldn't give up on black box just yet. As they are based in Cyprus and a small business it may take them a few days to respond. All else fails the MD, Colin is on the forum here so send him a PM.

As to serial number there should is one on the sticker on the back of the unit which may be of some help.

I hate to say it but replacing the touch screen is probably best left to black box and it will involve shipping back to them as they don't have any agents in Australia.

It would also be helpful if you have the details of the previous owner to hand so they can transfer the registration of the instrument over to you. Otherwise you will be locked out of getting updates.

Good luck

Cheers

Steve

The sticker on the back is the hardware number ,,, you need the software id to log in ,,,
Bugga

from what i ave seen so far to get BBS to fix including post is close to$300 ,,,
Thats a write-off ,,

getting worried about buying any second hand stuff now ,, i brought my discovery from here and the seller lied bad ,,,
Has cost me over $9000 in 3 months with me doing the work ,,,, so many problems ,,

Now the nanocom to fix the rest of the dramas is stuffed before i get to use ,,,,

Im sure 99.99999% of sellers here are cool ,,, i seem to attract the .00001% of dodgy ones ,,,,

Pity as i pay good money ,, im not a cheap skate ,, im not after No free lunch items ,,,,
and still get ripped ,,,,,

NOT REAL HAPPY AT THE MOMENT TO SAY THE LEAST >>

The touch screen itself should be quite cheap. Assuming that is the only thing broken (ie no board damage) then should be able to be replaced here. IF BBS are willing to ship you the parts or give you part numbers to source yourself, then you may get out of it quite cheaply - Assuming BBS are OK with that.

If you are only getting the back light on the screen and no indication of some sort of image then I'd be concerned about more damage than just the screen. If you are getting some sort of image on the screen then it is likely all is well with the other electronics.

Let us know how you go and may your bad fortune turn in to good.

Im an electronics tech
i have vast experience in Transmitters ,
i restore valve radios for the fleet air arm museum ,

I have had many hours inside modern electronics but as i have had my pinky chopped off in a gun safe and a grinder go thru 2 fingers in 2001 ,, ( please don't laugh )
Then valentines day this year i took my wife to budging creek for lunch , I slipped on a mossy rock and dislocated 2 fingers on my right hand and broke my right pinky in 3 places ,,,,
So have a problem with small electronic connectors like the slip ribbon holders ,,, Also the eyes are crook as ,,, lol

but if its a 4 wire digi glass they are common ,, just need to fine the one that the ribbon comes out the right spot ,,,, then just a matter of aligning the screen with the software ,,,

There are loads on here ,,,

Crikey Rob, keep those hands in your pockets!

You know what you're talking about, should be quite straight forward. As you say, get the right Part No from BBS and you should have it sorted in no time.

I have replaced digitizers on phones and ipads and do other electrical repairs and mods , i dont think a nano would be much different hardware wise.

Try a PM to phil&liz

Success
I tried another screen and was able to calibrate it. The 1st screen must have been very different to the one I first used.

They stated they've had success in replacing the screen. I asked them to post part numbers but they did not reply, you may have better luck.

Any how the seller Jim is a top bloke ,, we have gone ? in the deal as its nether of our faults and Australia post is useless ,,

If i can find a digitiser and fix ,, i will send Jim his ? back ..

anyhow if i find a source for the clear 3.5 inch digitiser screen i will buy 6 and hand them out or repair there units for them as i believe sending a product ? way around the world is crazy ,,

I will Keep everyone in the loop and video the repair ,,
i will remove the digitiser on Monday and see is there is a makers mark of #numbers on and do a search ,,,

Anyone else with a cracked screen that wants in on the project just flick me a PM ,,,,,

The screen part number is TSA0159 and I have four screens available.
One I couldn't calibrate (still may be OK), the others are unused.

Great stuff Rob

I look forward to hearing how you go particularly, as you have pointed out, the cost of shipping to BBS and repair makes it almost a cheaper to bin it and buy a new tool.

Fingers crossed (xcuse the pun:D:D) BBS will be able to give you the information you need.

Cheers

Steve

You will also require a new screen surround sticker. You have to strip it to release the screen and slide the board out.
My screen is fine but the unit won't power up.
Think the processor is fried.
It's too expensive to send to Cyprus to be repaired. It's not financially viable.
I'd pay $100 to $150 to have it fixed, but not $300+

Anyone have any joy in replacing screen on their nanocom evo?
I see in thread part number of TSA0159, I'm in NZ and cost of sending to Cyprus for repair seems inhibitive.
If I could obtain screen and get someone more local to repair, I would be very interested

Sort of related..

The touch screen on my motorcycle GPS failed to respond to my finger. The display was still good but the lack of input made it usedless.

I bought a touchscreen off evilbay and fitted it. Worked a treat but I had to change the orientation electrically by 90 deg.

It might be possible to fit a new screen to the Nanocom. I can see the TSA0159 is available on evilbay.

The 40 thieves mob have 'em for ten bucks. Probably from the same factory.

It's definitely something I would try, if my Nano ever died. The Nano is not some mystical device. It could be done. I replaced the screen in an iPhone once, and it's a little more complex and miniaturised than the Nano, and harder to get into. Of course, I'm not going to try it out on my currently working Nano, but the things are going to get harder to get, as the number of cars that need them diminish. There's going to be less and less of a business model. The big issue probably won't be the screens, it will be with the proprietary nature of the firmware on the chips. I can't ever see BBS making that open source, even though the chips themselves are probably readily available.

As for needing a sticker for the screen, post #12, I doubt it's necessary. There's no reason I can see why the guts of the Nano couldn't be installed in a totally different enclosure if it came to it. Same thing probably applies to the "proprietary" leads that come with the thing. Of course, this would prevent sending the thing back for repair, but it seems most people no longer wish to do that. I don't. The things cost too much in the first place, for what they are. I think what we really pay for is the firmware that allows communication with the LR diagnostics, which is in my opinion worth it. But we have already paid for that. The board and chips are worth peanuts, and imo repairs should reflect that.
