Even though I love my Disco as if it were a child, I refuse to pay $40 to replace a wiper every time they get old and dont work any more. So after putting inserts in that dont work what have people out there done for wipers other than buying the whole thing from LR

I used Ford inserts supplied by my dealer when I had my disco. Seemed to work OK.

I use inserts from Autobarn. The guys there said that Trico wipers are not Aussie made any more and are absolute rubbish. He had some others that are working fine.
I change mine at every 20,000k's which works out to be once a year, give or take.
And its cheaper! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I just get inserts from Supercheap or similar. Stay away from the tripple blades they are useles and actually seperate from each other. The standard single or twin blade Aunger ones are what I use most often. It usually is neccessary to replace them yearly. If you live inareas that get extermely hot or cold and the blades stick to the screen it is normal to have to replace them more often. Most people when they wash their car forget to lift the blades and give them a wash and clean, this helps with longevity. No way would I buy them through a dealer. Truth be known they woul only get the same from a wholesaler anyway.

Do you have any problem with the tension not being right for the windscreen and not wiping parts of it

Had a shocking run with the OEM ones - they would just shred themselves when they got near any mud or dust , price was also ridiculous.
Now use some that Canberra Motor Works (Mitchell ACT) sell for about $20 a set - look like the OEM ones (but are not) , work well and last well,
cheers

None at all. It wipes fantastic from tip to tip so to speak. I snap the blade at the marks so it leaves about 20mm hanging out of the bottom of the wiper. Bigger swipe = more vision style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Yes I think I seem to be having this problem, it misses 2 big streaks on the drivers side & new blades don't seam to fix it. It is a pain cause it is right in the drivers veiw, Is there a way to fix it or just replace the whole wiper ?????

Apparently it is a problem with the series 2 discos and LR believe they can justify $40 per side. Just have to find some blades out here that will do it style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

sometimes this missing bands can be caused from bent wiper holders, i have gone back to using the steel backed blades and simply relace the rubbers for about $3 a go, this IMHO is the best way to go
I have tried triple blades and the flash coloured silicon blades - all to go back to the original black rubber with graphite on them.

My blades have just started peeling at the ends recently. I didn't notice as we haven't had rain for ages until a week or so ago.
As I am going on a trip in mid November I am interested in which substitute blades people recommend because I did get bitten by L/Rover last year (once bitten twice shy).
So double blades OK & check out Autobarn for Aunger or similar seems the go ??

I had a similar problem when I purchased new wiper blades for my 01 Discovery from Southside Landrover in Brisbane about a year ago. I could not believe I needed to pay $60 for a pair when I only wanted the refills.
The spare parts guy took a fair amount of time showing me and explaining why I needed the entire blade and not just the refill. When I asked him how long they should last he told me to use them at least once a week with the windscreen washer otherwise they would go hard and perish. I have done this and they have lasted longer than any other type I have had on any vehicle.
I don't use the landy on dusty roads often but I travelled to Broome via the Kimberly area earlier this year and used the wipers several times a day with dust and mud (river crossings). I kept the old ones and plan to hunt around for refills when needed.
I read a post somewhere from USA and they recommend Disco 1 arms as the replacement for Disco 2's as refills are easy to source. Has anyone tried this in Australia?
I did not replace the rear wiper but it is in need of it soon.
Hope this helps.

I don't know the type of blade used on the D2 so it's a bit hard to offer advice.
However, if they are like the P38A blades which use two narrow stainless steel strip inserts, then try the Trico TTR610 (I use these).
Cut off the retaining clip end - not used on a P38A and then adjust length to suit. The only problem is that these units are meant to be broken at the stamped marks at the other end - but that's not a big problem.

i am using those fancy coloured silicon blades on my cars.....
they work well.....too well.....
the glass is dry after the first wipe so i am worried i may burn out my wiper motor from the grip they have on the glass when dry.....
dirty or dusty glass will always chew out wiper blades no matter what you use.....
once the edge is even slightly rough it will leave streaks and wet lines on your windscreen......
maintenance......wash or wipe the blades clean regularly and with the rubber ones a small amount of graphite powder may be applied to the inserts to keep them gliding across the glass without much friction....
(this is what they come covered with when new)

Not a DII owner (YET) but I use my wipers every day as I hate a dirty screen, and I get well over 12 months out of the refils.
But I also clean the blades every time I fill up with fuel.
