View Full Version : left hand or right hand thread?

I'm currently dismantling a 97' 3.9l.
Can anyone tell me, is the bolt that holds the belt pully and timing wheel ( excuse the term if its wrong!), a left hand or right hand thread ?
I suspect that if the engine rotates clockwise, the bolt must undo anti clock wise - is this right or am I an idiot ?

Talk out leaving yourself open to cop a bit from this mob 8O style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
Although not familiar with it, but I would be thinking it as anticlockwise. The keyway holds the pulley in postion, the bolt really only stops it from falling off.

It would be left handed.
so it will undo the opposite way to the motors cranking direction.
keyways in shafts are mostly for driving, in this case driving the
crankshaft pulley and indexing the timing mark.

Wouldnt that make it a right hand thread ? It is definately anti clockwise to undo.

A revese cut thread will have slits cut into the nuts. Check out any toxic gas fitting (eg BBQ) and you will see what I mean.

Normally these things undo in the direction of rotation. If it goes clockwise, then that makes it a LH thread. (turn clockwise to undo).

if you ae refering to the crank shaft pulley....it undoes anti clockwise....
just fit a socket on your breaker bar and fit it to the nut then with the breaker bar against the chassis rail and everyone well clear just give the engine a blip on the starter.....this will undo the nut without any damage to your knuckles....
the nut on the fan if you have a clutch fan undoes in a clockwise direction...

Hell....are you a mechanic or a bloody butcher :?: 8O 8O style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
The nut would not be that tight that you have to resort to this type of removal. It would be tight but a good crack with the breaker bar should be good enough..after that it would undo by hand.
Ps. I have nasty visions of breaker bar going through bystanders bodyparts or instant rounded bolt head...and where would you be then style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

[b]there is no way you would round off a bolt as big as the one on a crankshaft pulley..... unless you are using an open end spanner.....
also will you hold the engine from spinning whilst i undo the bolt....?
its only done up to about 260Nm of torque.....
and also you should never turn an engine backwards as it stuffs the timing gear.....

Fair enough, but its a lot of torque for a crankshaft bolt and a bit of a bugger to get it off.

right i just did what i should have done yesterday.
the crank puller bolt is deffinatly right handed, so as tony said
anti clockwise to undo.

not always true. eg. LH tie rod ends.

WORKS PERFECT.
just remove coil wire or the like.
