has anyone rebuilt their air compressor

Gday All,


I have a 2008 model so can only assume its the original compressor , Hitachi I assume , so has anyone bothered to refurbish theirs or just replace with the AMK model.


I have no issue's yet but thinking preventative before an issue starts.


or maybe let sleeping dogs lie.

I would think its worth doing whilst its still going.
Have you seen the current thread on the AMK issues Justin is having???
He has found a rebuild kit for the AMK,in the past there were Hitachi kits.He even found the beads for the air dryer.

Check out 4x4airseals.com. I have done the kit with the beads and new cap. Mine is MY08 and still going strong.

They do full piston kits also.

Get some lube spray into the air hoses connectors on the pump to make removal easy. Some good videos and threads online.

Any easy job for a man of your ability.

I rebuilt mine when it started to play up and fault on high temp. Also a 2008 model with the hitachi compressor. The desiccant drier was blocked due to the beads breaking down and going solid - so definitely something that needs to be serviced and the beads replaced at least every 80-100k or maybe 5-6 years.

The first time I re-assembled the compressor itself, I did not put any loctite on the compressor head bolts and sure enough a few weeks later one came loose and the compressor would fault. Second time round I used loctite and it has been running ok since.

If it plays up again then I will replace with a new Hitachi rather than convert, only as I figure if the original lasts 8 years, then you would hope the replacement does the same - especially now that I know the descant drier should have the beads replaced.

Cheers Andy - I figure my AMK has probably had one of the hardest lives around and has lasted 6 years basically.
I have also heard the Hitachi rebuild is quite easy compared to the AMK compressor, but when my kit arrives, I will see how hard of a job the AMK actually is!

No I did the desiccant and filters as a precaution. There was nothing wrong with it before the job. The lid was also not cracked as suggested as a common problem.

It is maybe a bit quicker now.

When I had it out on the workbench I must admit the prospect of taking it apart was frightening.

There are good how to videos on the suppliers website.

The screws on the cap self-tap into the plastic body. It did not occur to me to locktite them. Removing the pump again is a job I could do without.

I also replaced the piston seals and o-rings as a pre-caution but not sure if it needed to be done. The new piston seals definitely made the piston feel tighter when I first assembled.

If I was doing it all again, I would baseline the performance first, replace the desiccant beads and filters and then compare performance before deciding if to go further.

A bit of a tip is to slot the upper bracket hole so you can leave the upper bolt in the chassis for ease of removal and refit.
I have done a few Hitachi rebuilds over the years however none have lasted long enough in my opinion to be worthwhile. If people are paying me to repair their EAS fault i will be fitting the upgraded AMK and saving them the heartache and inconvenience of a flat tray trip back here in a few months time...
