Hi All,
I got back home from overseas and was welcomed by a dead starter motor on my Disci 1, 3.9 V8. This was no big surprise as it was playing up before I left. I had been through a fair bit of bonnet high flood water a few months ago which I suspect may have affected the starter or it may just be past its’ use by date.
I asked for advice on this forum while I was in Indonesia about probable causes for reduced power and excessive fuel consumption and consequently booked for a complete check with Rick’s 4WD Centre on the Gold Coast. Risk was recommended by this forum and will now fit a new starter motor, plus diagnostics etc., so I’ll post results (hopefully positive) after Rick performs his magic.

By the way, Rick’s quote for the starter motor was a bit over $400 compared to $1,285.95 to buy over the counter from the LR dealer - a considerable difference in price. Thanks heaps to this forum! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I paid $280 for a new starter for my V8 last year. Its a reduction job that I got through the local auto elec.

You might save a bit more if you shop around.

And there is quite a good chance that the problem with the old starter is only brushes anyway - perhaps just stuck, no parts needed.

thats the good thing about starters and alternators
they can be rebuilt at a fraction of the cost for a new
one. most starters wil just be dead brushes or lack of grease
on the drive gear.
