View Full Version : L322 vs Landcruiser - the grey nomads have it.

Having never previously set up camp in a caravan park for more than an overnight stop, our few days in Broome's Cable Beach caravan park has been something of a revelation.
My FFRR feels terribly out of place. People look at it as I drive through the park, with a look that seems to say 'what's THAT doing here? It's not a Landcruiser!"

This is a massive park, with more than 500 bays. And I swear, more than half of all the cars here are Saharas. I'd never really thought about the Grey Dollar, but by crikey, these old folks wield some serious financial power, with their $130,000 Saharas hooked up to their massive $100,000-plus caravans.

If anybody here on the forum works for Toyota, I offer this idea for their next commercial: put out a call to all Grey Nomads in Broome who drive 'Cruisers - line up on Cable Beach for a photo shoot. You'd get more than a thousand of 'em, easy, on any given day.

Having said all that...I still like the idea of having probably the only FFRR in the whole of Broome, and certainly this part of it:-)

Greg don't worry they are just blind leading the blind. Unimaginative and bored. And some of the lc200 issues can be more expensive and inconvenient than any ffrr problems...☺

Pedro there are plenty of other parks in Broome - all of 'em full of grey nomads driving Cruisers:-)

Don't shout this around, but about three weeks ago I spent a week with some buddies driving to Dirk Hartog Island and back, doing some fishing. We took Ian's new Sahara (the roads on the island are so narrow and rocky he now regrets volunteering his car:-) and to be honest it was big, powerful and pretty comfortable...in that bland, characterless, pedestrian kind of way that seems bred into the DNA of all Toyotas. Yes, I could - and might one day - buy one if we ever decided to seriously join Grey Nomadship - but I don't think I could ever be thrilled by it. Nobody walks past a Cruiser and thinks 'Mmmmm...'

Are the first words out of their mouth "so what sort of fuel economy do you get out of that?"

It seems to be the default grey nomad question everywhere I've been. And when you're driving a 101 you should see the looks they give you when your answer is "She's been running like a dream today - got down to 22LPH on the flat" :D

Nobody's asked me that yet. But I'd be happy to tell them mine gets better economy than their Cruiser. By a long way. Towing a 1.6 ton camper at 110, we averaged 15l/100km on the 2,100km drive up here, and a fair bit of that was on dirt.

Read your post Greg and had huge d?j? vu re van park in Alice Springs in July last year - more 70 series LC than I've ever seen in my life But the real surprise was the number of recent model diesel Jeep GC's towing big on road vans; dozens of them. But doubt they ever left the bitumen.. :p

When I was asked (as I was frequently) why I wasn't in a Sahara I just responded: - air suspension comfort and height adjustment; 8 gears, better economy, more torque and more power ....and did I mention air suspension....and more power and torque....

I've spent a whole....5 minutes in a 200...
I can only describe it as 'adequate'
You should hear my description of the hilux, its considerably less flattering and I might not get invited to polo by the RR crowd if I say it here :p

I was at Agnes Water recently and there were quite a few LC200s. But also a few Jeep Cherokee, Pajeros, Rangers and Everests.

I was the odd one out in a Land Rover.

Nothing wrong with the LC 200 Sahara , I been in several , and if someone wanted to give me 1 I would take it.

I never been in a FFRR so I can't compare , but my D3 ride is as good if not better and I'm happy.

I was camped alongside a family at Katherine a few days back and he took his in for a service the next day, he didn't have as many nice things to say about his LC200 that night when we were having a couple drinks. Think he was a lot lighter in the wallet than he was expecting to be.

I just find Most Toyota owners believe there is nothing else on the market , they have had them before and that's what they will keep having.

Cheers Ean

Let's face it ,a lot of Toyota drivers are sucked in by Toyota's marketing ,for example... Unbreakable hilux ..what a crock !!...I have seen 3 2014 model hilux at auction ,less than 50000 km ( ex mining ) with massive fractures to the firewall and strut tower /skirt !!.. And another example ..oh what a feeling ??...I think that feeling would be ,dull ,ho hum , bored and unexcited / disinterested ...that would sum up most Toyota products... White goods on wheels with no class or style !!....Glen it must feel good to have the nicest vehicle ( and the only one with any class ) in the park !

Guy here traded his LC200 Sahara on a D4 SDV6..

Never smiled more - he's on this forum...

Far superior towing, far superior fuel economy and far better acceleration, with a better ride and no need for WDH BS...

If you sit in/drive a late model L322 it will ruin your D3 for you.
I thought my D4 was fantastic, comfortable, quiet etc etc, then I went for a ride in my father's MY12 L322 Autobiography. The D4 just felt ordinary afterwards. Then I got to drive the 4.4 TDV8...
that was a while ago and my D4 has dulled the memory of the FFRR but I won't forget how fantastic the ride is in it.
If you say an LC200 is comparable to your D3, it has nothing on FFRR

I was collected in the Queens Range Rover when I purchased my D4 and flew to Melbourne to collect.

Was a very very nice machine..

But certainly didn't ruin the D4 for me...

And I was using until recently a 1982 Hilux diesel on my mate's property that had seen beach duty and neglect til we got it but still started and ran every time. It is a POS but it's a reliable POS. Did what we asked of it. No high expectations. Toyota philosophy.

Muddy Mech, Scouse, and I were having lunch with a lass last Thursday - she has a new HiLux as a company car. She was scathing of the brakes. She said it just doesn't want to stop.

Gav, what do you think of the brakes on your company Lux?

Well, being the only FFRR in Broome, it's kinda nice to drive down onto Cable Beach at low tide and have a few beers in the sunset:-)

I have been across those rocks in a rental Patrol on a rapidly rising tide :o. Had to time my drive between waves. Needed to get to the airport for flyout day :D.

Yep, more than a few people have been caught napping on the wrong side of those rocks at high tide. We've had 9 metre tide changes here in the past couple of weeks. It does move damn fast.

Still the only FFRR IN Broome. A rare sight parked out front of the infamous Roebuck Bay pub. 111904
