View Full Version : clunk in the diff????

I've got a mate who just test drove a 1999 TD5 defender. He reckons when you engage the clutch there is a thund noise from the diff, not chunking gears. It sounds like there is a bit of excessive play in the diff. Is this bad news for that model/common? or can it be fixed relatively easily/cheaply. Besides that the car is sweet, so maybe just a diff overhaul is required.

any thoughts??

Diff, axle splines, propshaft.

Download one of the repair manuals in the download section.

I'm pretty sure one of them has a rundown on testing some of it.

Jack up one end and start wiggling things about.

Or buy it if the price is real good and go real smooth on the clutch as you take off and change gears.

Prop shafts are reasonably cheap.

If your mate is planning on putting in diff-locks it won't be much of an issue.

Cheers

Check that it really is the diff - it could be the ball joint in the A frame of the rear suspension is worn. Search on that topic in this forum and you will find plenty of info.

First thing to check are the bolts that hold the rear propshaft to the handbrake drum, these are always working loose on Defenders. Have seen these come loose on Defenders with less than 30k on the clock.

Cheers for putting this up Jimmy for me.

Turns out its the back axles, worn splines. Aparently common and explains why most i've looked at have upgraded to a more heavy duty pair of axles at the back.

From ringing around it seems about $800 will get me an upgraded pair and i'll bribe the old man to help me fit them.

Doesn't need doing straight away either, just won't be dropping the clutch on her in a hurry!

brett.

sweet, charge the purchase mate, then we should organise a team assault on Black Point via the summer track.

Did you see the roller draws for sale on the forum - over east though.
